On the defaults — 180 lb, 60 minutes, MET 7.5 — handball calories are 612.35 kcal, or 10.21 kcal a minute. This is the handball calories tool: turn pounds into kilograms, multiply by the MET value for calories an hour, then scale by the minutes — a session guessed from the minutes alone tells you nothing until the weight and intensity behind it are known.
Put your weight, minutes, and MET value in: 180 lb handball for 60 minutes at MET 7.5 burns 612.35 kcal — 612.35 kcal an hour, 10.21 a minute.
It means a 180 lb player, playing handball for sixty minutes at MET 7.5, burns six hundred and twelve point three five kilocalories in total, which is ten point two one kilocalories a minute. The weight sets the body moved, the MET sets how hard the game is, and the minutes set how long the burn runs: a heavier player burns more on the same minutes, a harder game burns more on every minute, and longer play burns more without changing the rate. The only judgement is the MET — 7.5 must be the average intensity actually played, sprints, throws, and defending included, not the hardest break alone.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Weight in kilograms | pounds × 0.45359237 | 81.65 kg — 180 × 0.45359237. |
| Calories an hour | MET × kilograms | 612.35 kcal — 7.5 × 81.65. |
| Session total | calories an hour × minutes ÷ 60 | 612.35 kcal — 612.35 × 60 ÷ 60. |
| Calories a minute | total ÷ minutes | 10.21 kcal — 612.35 ÷ 60. |
First, check the weight honestly: 180 lb must be the weight actually moving on the court, not the weight remembered from last season — a weight remembered twenty pounds light understates the 60-minute burn by about sixty-eight calories. Second, check the MET against the whole game, not the highlight: 7.5 must be the average across easy passages, fast breaks, and defending, because a game of gentle play with a few hard breaks is not an 8.5 all the way through, and a MET borrowed from the hardest break lifts the whole session by more than a tenth. Third, check the minutes against the clock: 60 minutes must be minutes actually playing, not time on the bench, between halves, or waiting to rotate in — a visit with twenty minutes on the bench burns for forty playing minutes, not sixty.
180 lb, 60 minutes, MET 7.5. Kilograms: 180 × 0.45359237 = 81.65 kg. Per hour: 7.5 × 81.65 = 612.35 kcal. Total: 612.35 × 60 ÷ 60 = 612.35 kcal. Per minute: 612.35 ÷ 60 = 10.21 kcal. In practice that means an hour of steady handball burns about six hundred and twelve calories — the number to set against a daily target, and the 612.35 figure to use when a longer game is weighed against a harder one.
At 90 minutes instead of 60, the burn rises to 918.53 kcal. At 150 lb instead of 180, the burn falls to 510.29 kcal. At MET 8.5 instead of 7.5, the burn rises to 694 kcal. At 45 minutes instead of 60, the burn falls to 459.26 kcal.
The minutes behind 612.35 kcal are 60: at 45 minutes the burn is 459.26 kcal; at 90 minutes it is 918.53 kcal. The weight behind 612.35 kcal is 180 lb: at 150 lb the burn is 510.29 kcal; at 200 lb it is 680.39 kcal — the weight never touches the rate per kilogram, only the total the body burns.
The defaults assume 60 minutes of steady general handball at MET 7.5, played continuously apart from the normal breaks inside a game. They do not assume a full tournament day, a competitive match at full intensity, or an hour mostly spent on the bench — a hard competitive match needs a higher MET, so treat 612.35 as the steady-game burn, not the tournament burn.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the weight, the minutes actually played, and the true average MET. Real handball varies with position, break speed, and court size — so treat 612.35 as the planning burn for an hour of steady play at MET 7.5, and check it against one timed game before quoting it to anyone else.

612.35 kcal on the defaults: 180 lb, 60 minutes, MET 7.5 — 81.65 kg × 7.5 = 612.35 kcal an hour, and 60 minutes is a full hour.
7.5 for steady general handball, near 6 for gentle recreational play, near 8.5 for vigorous competitive play. Use the average across the whole game, not the hardest break.
Because the MET formula is defined in kilograms: calories an hour = MET × weight in kilograms. Multiplying MET by pounds instead overstates the burn by more than double.
Not necessarily: the surface matters less than the intensity, so a beach game at the same MET burns the same — enter the MET actually played and every figure follows.
10.21 kcal a minute on the defaults: 612.35 ÷ 60. Multiply by the minutes actually played for any game length.
