How to Calculate Your RSU Value: A Step-by-Step Guide

The example is a 1,000-share grant at $50, vesting over 4 years, taxed at 22%, growing 5% a year — $50,000.00 on paper, $39,000.00 after tax, $47,404.74 projected at full vest — plus the five reverses. Seven steps, worked line by line, and taxed at vest as the key idea.

The formula, in one paragraph

How to calculate your RSU value comes down to five numbers. The example is a 1,000-share grant at $50 a share, vesting over 4 years, taxed at 22%, growing 5% a year: grant value $50,000.00, 250 shares per vest, $12,500.00 per vest before tax, $2,750.00 of tax per vest, $9,750.00 kept per vest, $39,000.00 kept in total, $812.50 a month, projected price $60.78 at full vest, projected grant $60,775.31, and projected net $47,404.74.

Step 1: The grant value

The grant value is the shares times the share price: 1,000 × $50 = $50,000.00. This is the number on the grant letter, and it is the number most people stop at — but it is not what you keep, because the tax comes off at vest. A 500-share grant is worth $25,000.00, and a 2,000-share grant is worth $100,000.00.

Step 2: Shares per vest

Most grants vest in equal annual instalments. The shares per vest are the shares divided by the vesting years: 1,000 / 4 = 250 shares a year. Over 3 years it vests 333.33 shares a year, and over 5 years 200. The total is the same either way — 1,000 shares — but the size of each vest changes, and so does the tax bill in each year.

Step 3: Value per vest and the tax

The value per vest is the shares per vest times the share price: 250 × $50 = $12,500.00. This counts as income in the year it vests: RSUs are taxed as ordinary income AT VEST, on the value that day. The tax per vest is the value times your marginal rate: $12,500.00 × 22% = $2,750.00. The 22% withheld at vest is often only a down payment: at a 37% marginal rate the tax is $4,625.00 per vest, leaving $1,875.00 still to pay.

Step 4: Net per vest and total net

The net per vest is the value minus the tax: $12,500.00 × 0.78 = $9,750.00. The total net is the grant value times (1 − tax rate): $50,000.00 × 0.78 = $39,000.00. A $50,000 grant at 22% tax is $39,000 in your pocket. At 12% the total net is $44,000.00, and at 37% it is $31,500.00 — ten points of tax is $5,000 of the grant.

Step 5: The monthly equivalent

The monthly equivalent is the net per vest divided by 12: $9,750.00 / 12 = $812.50 a month. It compares the grant with your salary: a $50,000 grant over 4 years at 22% tax is about $812.50 a month after tax, on top of your pay. The money arrives one vest a year, so this is a budgeting number, not a payment schedule.

Step 6: The projected value at full vest

The projected value is what the grant will be worth at full vest, if the price grows. The projected price is the current price times (1 + growth) to the power of the vesting years: $50 × 1.05^4 = $60.78. The projected grant is the shares times the projected price: 1,000 × $60.78 = $60,775.31. The projected net is the projected grant times (1 − tax rate): $60,775.31 × 0.78 = $47,404.74. At 0% growth the projected net is $39,000.00; at 10% it is $57,099.90; at −10% it is $25,587.90 (projected price $32.81). None of this is guaranteed.

Step 7: Working backwards — the five reverses

The shares for a $100,000 total net are 2,564 (exact 2564.1026): at 2,564 shares the total net is $99,996.00 ($4.00 under), at 2,565 shares it is $100,035.00 ($35.00 over) — 2,564 is the nearest. The share price for a $50,000 total net is $64.10 (exact 64.1026): at $64.10 the total net is $49,998.00 ($2.00 under), at $64.11 it is $50,005.80 ($5.80 over) — $64.10 is the nearest. The tax rate for a $45,000 total net is 10% (exact): at 10% the total net is $45,000.00 exactly. The vesting years for a $5,000 net per vest are 7.8 years (exact): at 7.8 years the net per vest is $5,000.00 exactly. The growth rate for a $75,000 projected grant is 10.67% (exact 10.6682%): at 10.67% the projected grant is $75,004.90 ($4.90 over), at 10.66% it is $74,977.80 ($22.20 under) — 10.67% is the nearest.

What changes the answer

Four things move the answer. The share count: 500 shares keep $19,500.00, 2,000 keep $78,000.00. The price: $25 a share keeps $19,500.00, $100 keeps $78,000.00. The tax rate: 12% keeps $44,000.00, 37% keeps $31,500.00. The vesting years do not move the total net: 3 years and 5 years both keep $39,000.00 — but the longer vest means more growth: $45,147.38 at 3 years, $49,774.98 at 5 years. Growth moves only the projection: 0% gives $39,000.00, 10% gives $57,099.90.

What NOT to do

Do not count the grant as money in the bank: $50,000 on paper is $39,000 after 22% tax, due in the year the shares vest. Do not assume the 22% withheld covers the tax: at a 37% marginal rate another 15% is still owed. Do not spend the projected value before it vests: unvested shares are forfeited if you leave, and at −10% growth the projected net is $25,587.90.

Grant = shares × price; per vest = shares / years; value per vest = per-vest shares × price; tax = value × rate; net = value × (1 − rate); total net = shares × price × (1 − rate); monthly = net / 12; projected price = price × (1 + growth)^years; projected grant = shares × projected price; projected net = projected grant × (1 − rate)

That box is the whole formula.

Worked example: 1,000 shares at $50, 4 years, 22% tax, 5% growth

Grant 1,000 × $50 = $50,000.00; shares per vest 250; value per vest $12,500.00; tax per vest $2,750.00; net per vest $9,750.00; total net $39,000.00; monthly $812.50; projected price $60.78; projected grant $60,775.31; projected net $47,404.74.

Answer: $50,000.00 on paper, $39,000.00 after 22% tax — $9,750.00 per vest, $812.50 a month, and $47,404.74 projected at full vest.

Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my RSU value?

Five steps: grant value = shares × price, then shares per vest, value per vest, tax per vest, and net per vest. On a 1,000-share grant at $50, 4 years, 22% tax and 5% growth, the grant is $50,000.00, each vest is 250 shares worth $12,500.00, the tax is $2,750.00, the net is $9,750.00 per vest, the total net is $39,000.00, and the projected net is $47,404.74.

How much tax do I pay when my RSUs vest?

$2,750.00 on a $12,500.00 vest at 22%. RSUs are taxed as ordinary income at vest, on the value that day. The 22% withheld at vest is often only a down payment — at a 37% marginal rate the tax is $4,625.00 per vest, leaving $1,875.00 still to pay. At 12% the tax is $1,500.00 per vest.

How many shares do I need for $100,000 after tax?

2,564 shares at $50 and 22% tax (exact 2564.1026). Each share is worth $50 × 0.78 = $39.00 after tax, so $100,000 / $39.00 = 2,564.1026 shares. At 2,564 shares the total net is $99,996.00 ($4.00 under); at 2,565 it is $100,035.00 ($35.00 over) — 2,564 is the nearest.

What share price gives me $50,000 after tax?

$64.10 a share (exact 64.1026). With 1,000 shares and 22% tax, the price has to be $50,000 / (1,000 × 0.78) = $64.1026. At $64.10 the total net is $49,998.00 ($2.00 under); at $64.11 it is $50,005.80 ($5.80 over) — $64.10 is the nearest.

What is my RSU worth if the price grows 5% a year?

$47,404.74 after tax at full vest. The projected price is $50 × 1.05^4 = $60.78, the projected grant is $60,775.31, and the projected net is $60,775.31 × 0.78 = $47,404.74. At 0% growth the projected net is $39,000.00, and at 10% it is $57,099.90 — but the price can fall too: at −10% a year it is $25,587.90.

Do I lose my RSUs if I leave my job?

Yes — unvested shares are forfeited. You only own the shares that have vested. A 1,000-share grant over 4 years vests 250 shares a year, so leaving after two years means keeping 500 shares and forfeiting 500. The total net on the vested half is $19,500.00 at $50 and 22% tax.
