Grab Bar Height Chart: Low, Standard or High Mount

On the default — 36 inches — the height is 91.44 cm, which matches a standard grab bar. Put in your own height in inches, and the chart works out the height in centimetres and the grab bar type it matches. No grab-bar-height page of any kind exists on the site — the towel-bar chart (run 439) gives towel BAR heights, the towel-ring chart (run 442) gives towel RING heights, the robe-hook chart (run 443) gives robe HOOK heights, the coat-hook chart (run 440) gives coat HOOK heights, the soap-dispenser chart (run 445) gives soap DISPENSER heights, the toilet-paper-holder chart (run 444) gives toilet paper HOLDER heights, the towel-hook chart (run 447) gives towel HOOK heights, and the mirror chart (run 437) gives MIRROR heights. This one is grab bar height ONLY — how high above the floor to mount a grab bar, in inches and centimetres.

Grab bar height chart

Low grab bars run 29–32 inches, standard grab bars run 33–36 inches, and high grab bars run 38–41 inches. Grab bar height is measured in inches in the US and in centimetres everywhere else — 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. The height is the distance from the finished floor to the top of the bar’s gripping surface — not how high the mounting plate sits, and not how far the bar stands off the wall. A low grab bar runs 29–32 inches high (73.66–81.28 cm) and sits beside a low bath seat or within a child’s reach, for short reaches. A standard grab bar runs 33–36 inches high (83.82–91.44 cm) — the common grab bar height is 36 inches (91.44 cm) — and it is the accessibility standard: the US accessibility rules put grab bars 33–36 inches above the floor beside the toilet, in the shower and by the tub, so a standard bar is the one that meets the code. A high grab bar runs 38–41 inches high (96.52–104.14 cm) and sits as a vertical entry bar by the shower or tub, or higher up for a tall user, for long reaches that stay clear of the floor. The bar hangs best where the hand falls naturally without leaning and without standing on tiptoe — mount it too high and the grip strains the shoulder, mount it too low and the user stoops to reach it. Heights between the bands — 37 inches — match no standard grab bar type: too tall for one band, too short for the next. Accessibility guidance puts the bar between 33 and 36 inches above the floor — the 36-inch standard sits at the top of that range, but the high band (38–41 inches) sits above it, so a high bar is not an accessible mount. A bar hung beside a toilet or tub follows a second rule as well: reach from the seat, not just height from the floor — most guidance puts it within easy reach of the seated position, close enough that the hand lands on the bar without leaning. When a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether the figure includes the mounting plate and the bar — some list the bar only, and some list the full fitted height; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

What is the standard grab bar height?

On the default — 36 inches — the height is 91.44 cm, which matches a standard grab bar. Low grab bars run 29–32 inches, standard grab bars run 33–36 inches, and high grab bars run 38–41 inches. The standard grab bar height is 33–36 inches — about 83.82–91.44 cm — beside the toilet, in the shower and by the tub at hand height, high enough to grip without stooping and low enough to reach without standing on tiptoe. A grab bar at 29 inches is beside a low bath seat; a grab bar at 41 inches is the tallest high bar.

Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.

First, 36 inches is 36 × 2.54 = 91.44 cm. Second, 36 inches falls in the 33–36 inch range, so it matches a standard grab bar. And third, the ranges are CLOSED — 29–32, 33–36 and 38–41 inches — so a height of 37 inches matches no standard type; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 36 inches.

Line 1 — the centimetres. The height is 36 × 2.54 = 91.44 cm.

Line 2 — the bar type. 36 inches falls in the 33–36 inch range, so it matches a standard grab bar.

Line 3 — the check. 91.44 cm ÷ 2.54 = 36 inches, the height; and a standard grab bar is 33–36 inches, so 36 inches falls inside the standard range.

Every branch, checked

Height 29: 29 in = 73.66 cm; matches low grab bar (1 type) — A 29-inch grab bar is 73.66 cm and matches low grab bar — beside a low bath seat.

The reverses, worked backwards

Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 80.00 cm: At the displayed 31.50 in the figures are 31.50 in = 80.01 cm; matches low grab bar (1 type). At the displayed 31.50 inches the height is 80.01 cm — the smallest height for the centimetre figure to reach 80.00 cm — and it matches a low grab bar. At 31.49 inches the height is 79.98 cm (unrounded 79.9846 cm) — below 80.00 cm — so 31.50 inches is the smallest height for the centimetre figure to reach 80.00 cm. Note: both 31.49 in and 31.50 in match a low grab bar (they fall in the 29–32 in range).

Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 90.00 cm: At the displayed 35.43 in the figures are 35.43 in = 89.99 cm (unrounded 89.9922 cm); matches standard grab bar (1 type). At the displayed 35.43 inches the height is 89.99 cm — the largest height for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 90.00 cm — and it matches a standard grab bar. At 35.44 inches the height is 90.02 cm (unrounded 90.0176 cm) — above 90.00 cm — so 35.43 inches is the largest height for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 90.00 cm. Note: both 35.43 in and 35.44 in match a standard grab bar (they fall in the 33–36 in range).

Smallest height to match a standard grab bar: At the displayed 33.00 in the figures are 33 in = 83.82 cm; matches standard grab bar (1 type). At the displayed 33.00 inches the height is 83.82 cm — the smallest height to match a standard grab bar — and it matches a standard grab bar. At 32.99 inches the height is 83.79 cm (unrounded 83.7946 cm) — below the 33-inch line — so 33.00 inches is the smallest height to match a standard grab bar. At 32.99 inches it matches no standard type at all.

Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 100.00 cm: At the displayed 39.38 in the figures are 39.38 in = 100.03 cm (unrounded 100.0252 cm); matches high grab bar (1 type). At the displayed 39.38 inches the height is 100.03 cm — the smallest height for the centimetre figure to reach 100.00 cm — and it matches a high grab bar. At 39.37 inches the height is 100.00 cm (unrounded 99.9998 cm) — displayed as 100.00 cm, below 100.00 cm — so 39.38 inches is the smallest height for the centimetre figure to reach 100.00 cm. Note: both 39.37 in and 39.38 in match a high grab bar (they fall in the 38–41 in range).

Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 105.00 cm: At the displayed 41.33 in the figures are 41.33 in = 104.98 cm (unrounded 104.9782 cm); matches no standard type. At the displayed 41.33 inches the height is 104.98 cm — the largest height for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 105.00 cm — and it matches a high grab bar. At 41.34 inches the height is 105.00 cm (unrounded 105.0036 cm) — above 105.00 cm — so 41.33 inches is the largest height for the centimetre figure to stay at or below 105.00 cm. Note: 41.33 in matches a high grab bar but 41.34 in matches NO standard grab bar type (it sits above the 38–41 in high band).

Smallest height to match a high grab bar: At the displayed 38.00 in the figures are 38 in = 96.52 cm; matches high grab bar (1 type). At the displayed 38.00 inches the height is 96.52 cm — the smallest height to match a high grab bar — and it matches a high grab bar. Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the height in centimetres is the height in inches × 2.54, exactly; the bar type is a closed-range match — low grab bars run 29–32 inches, standard grab bars run 33–36 inches, and high grab bars run 38–41 inches — and the heights between the ranges match no standard type — all rounded to two decimals half-up. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED centimetre figure: a neighbour one hundredth of an inch short shows as the target when rounded to two decimals, but its unrounded centimetre figure is below the target, so it does not meet the bar — the page prints the unrounded value in full. Negative heights are floored to zero: a height of −5 inches is treated as 0 inches, because a bar cannot hang below the floor. What the model cannot do is hang your bar: heights are measured from the finished floor to the top of the bar’s gripping surface, in inches and centimetres; accessibility guidance puts the bar between 33 and 36 inches above the floor — the 36-inch standard sits at the top of that range, but the high band (38–41 inches) sits above it, so a high bar is not an accessible mount; a bar hung beside a toilet or tub follows a second rule as well — reach from the seat, not just height from the floor — most guidance puts it within easy reach of the seated position, close enough that the hand lands on the bar without leaning; when a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether the figure includes the mounting plate and the bar — some list the bar only, and some list the full fitted height. The chart is a guide, not a rule — hang the bar where you can reach it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard grab bar height?

33–36 inches — about 83.82–91.44 cm. The standard grab bar height is 33–36 inches beside the toilet, in the shower and by the tub at hand height, high enough to grip without stooping and low enough to reach without standing on tiptoe.

How high should a grab bar be in a shower?

36 inches for a standard bar. A 36-inch grab bar is 91.44 cm high. Mount it beside the toilet, in the shower and by the tub — anywhere the hand falls naturally without leaning and without standing on tiptoe.

What is the lowest grab bar height?

29 inches. Low grab bars run 29–32 inches; a 29-inch grab bar is 73.66 cm high — beside a low bath seat.

What is the highest grab bar height?

41 inches. High grab bars run 38–41 inches; a 41-inch grab bar is 104.14 cm high — the tallest high bar.

What height matches no standard grab bar type?

37 inches, below 29 inches and above 41 inches. The ranges are closed — 29–32, 33–36 and 38–41 inches — so a height of 37 inches matches no standard type.

How do I convert grab bar height from inches to centimetres?

Multiply the inches by 2.54. 36 inches × 2.54 = 91.44 cm. 29 inches × 2.54 = 73.66 cm. 41 inches × 2.54 = 104.14 cm.

Is a high grab bar accessible?

No — accessibility guidance puts the bar between 33 and 36 inches above the floor, and the high band (38–41 inches) sits above it, so a high bar is not an accessible mount. The 36-inch standard sits at the top of that range.

Why does 31.49 inches show 79.98 cm?

Because the unrounded height is 79.9846 cm. 31.49 inches × 2.54 = 79.9846 cm, which rounds half-up to 79.98 cm — but it is still below the 80.00 cm line. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.
