On the defaults — a 40 lb dog, 1.6 activity, 350 kcal a cup, 2 meals a day — your dog needs 2.81 cups a day, 1.41 cups a meal. This is the dog food tool: weigh the dog once, read the bag once, and feed the same measured meals every day — a guessing scoop drifts the weight over weeks.
Put your dog weight, activity factor, calories per cup and meals per day in: a 40 lb dog at 1.6 activity needs 615.38 kcal resting, 984.61 kcal a day, 2.81 cups a day at 350 kcal a cup, 1.41 cups a meal.
It means a 40 lb dog at a 1.6 activity factor eats 2.81 cups of a 350 kcal-a-cup food each day, split into 1.41 cups at each of two meals. The resting energy is 615.38 kcal, from 70 times the weight in kilograms, 18.14, raised to the 0.75 power; daily energy is that resting figure times the activity factor, 984.61 kcal; and the cups are the daily calories divided by the calories in a cup. The per-meal figure is the planning number at the bowl, while the daily figure is the number that keeps the weight steady — a dog fed 2.81 cups a day holds its weight, and a dog fed a cup more or less each day drifts up or down over weeks, not days.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Weight in kg | pounds ÷ 2.20462 | 18.14 kg — 40 ÷ 2.20462. |
| Resting energy | 70 × kg to the power 0.75 | 615.38 kcal — 70 × 18.14 to the power 0.75. |
| Daily calories | resting × activity factor | 984.61 kcal — 615.38 × 1.6. |
| Cups a day | daily calories ÷ kcal a cup | 2.81 cups — 984.61 ÷ 350. |
| Cups a meal | cups a day ÷ meals | 1.41 cups — 2.81 ÷ 2. |
First, weigh the dog, do not guess: a 10 lb error on a 40 lb dog moves the daily food by about half a cup, which is a visible weight change over a month. Second, read the calories per cup off the bag you actually feed, not a typical figure — two foods at 350 and 400 kcal a cup differ by 0.35 cups a day on this dog. Third, judge the activity factor honestly: a couch dog at 1.2 needs 2.11 cups, while the same dog at 1.8 needs 3.16, so the factor is the whole difference between holding weight and gaining it. Treats, chews and table scraps sit outside this calculator — see the dog calorie calculator for the calorie side of the same dog.
40 lb dog, 1.6 activity, 350 kcal a cup, 2 meals a day. Weight in kilograms: 40 ÷ 2.20462 = 18.14 kg. Resting energy: 70 × 18.14 to the power 0.75 = 615.38 kcal. Daily calories: 615.38 × 1.6 = 984.61 kcal. Cups a day: 984.61 ÷ 350 = 2.81 cups. Cups a meal: 2.81 ÷ 2 = 1.41 cups. In practice that means 1.41 cups at breakfast and 1.41 cups at dinner, and the same 2.81 cups every day until the weight or the food changes.
With a 60 lb dog instead of 40 lb, the resting energy rises to 834.09 kcal and the need to 3.81 cups a day. With a 1.8 activity factor, the daily calories rise to 1107.68 kcal and the need to 3.16 cups a day. With a 400 kcal-a-cup food, the daily calories stay 984.61 kcal but the need falls to 2.46 cups a day, since each cup carries more energy. With 3 meals a day, the daily need stays 2.81 cups but each meal falls to 0.94 cups. Weight, activity, food richness and meals each move the bowl on their own, so a wrong bag figure is as costly as a wrong weight.
The weight behind 2.81 cups a day is 40 lb: at 30 lb the need is 2.27 cups a day (30 lb dog, 495.95 kcal resting, 793.52 kcal a day, 350 kcal a cup, 2 meals a day, 1.14 cups a meal); at 50 lb it is 3.33 cups a day (50 lb dog, 727.49 kcal resting, 1163.98 kcal a day, 350 kcal a cup, 2 meals a day, 1.67 cups a meal). The activity behind 2.81 cups a day is 1.6: at 1.2 the need is 2.11 cups a day (40 lb dog, 615.38 kcal resting, 738.46 kcal a day, 350 kcal a cup, 2 meals a day, 1.06 cups a meal); at 2 it is 3.52 cups a day (40 lb dog, 615.38 kcal resting, 1230.76 kcal a day, 350 kcal a cup, 2 meals a day, 1.76 cups a meal). The calories per cup behind 2.81 cups a day is 350 kcal: at 300 kcal the need is 3.28 cups a day (40 lb dog, 615.38 kcal resting, 984.61 kcal a day, 300 kcal a cup, 2 meals a day, 1.64 cups a meal); at 400 kcal it is 2.46 cups a day (40 lb dog, 615.38 kcal resting, 984.61 kcal a day, 400 kcal a cup, 2 meals a day, 1.23 cups a meal). Each reverse moves one input and holds the rest, so the step is exactly one weight, activity or food change.
The defaults assume a 40 lb adult dog, a 1.6 activity factor for a typical neutered adult, a 350 kcal-a-cup dry food, and 2 meals a day. They do not assume treats, chews, table scraps or a second food — a puppy, a pregnant dog or a dog in recovery needs a different factor, and the vet, not this calculator, sets it.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the weight and the activity factor. Real dogs gain and lose with treats, seasons and age, and the bag label overrides any planning figure; a weight guessed 10 lb high overfeeds by about half a cup a day, and an activity factor read off a working dog overfeeds a couch dog by a full cup. Treat 2.81 cups as the planning portion for a 40 lb dog at 1.6 activity on a 350 kcal-a-cup food, and re-weigh the dog monthly — if the weight moves, the portion moves with it.
Bright Side Kit, “Dog Food Calculator: 2.81 Cups a Day for a 40 lb Dog”, https://brightoolbox.com/dog-food-calculator/, accessed 3 November 2026. Students and researchers: cite the calculator name, the page URL and the date you used it, and quote the defaults (40 lb dog, 1.6 activity, 350 kcal a cup, 2 meals a day) so the 2.81-cup result can be checked.
2.81 cups a day of a 350 kcal-a-cup food, or 1.41 cups at each of two meals. The resting energy is 615.38 kcal, daily energy at 1.6 activity is 984.61 kcal, and 984.61 ÷ 350 = 2.81 cups.
Convert pounds to kilograms, raise to the 0.75 power and multiply by 70 for resting energy, multiply by the activity factor for daily calories, then divide by the calories per cup. A 40 lb dog at 1.6 activity on a 350 kcal-a-cup food is 615.38 kcal resting, 984.61 kcal a day, 2.81 cups.
Yes — it is the biggest lever after weight. The same 40 lb dog needs 2.11 cups at 1.2 activity, 2.81 cups at 1.6, and 3.16 cups at 1.8, all on the same food.
Yes, in calories, though this calculator counts only the food. Treats, chews and scraps add calories the bowl does not show, so a dog gaining weight on the right portion is usually eating treats off the books.
The daily total never changes with the meal count — 2.81 cups is 2.81 cups. Two meals of 1.41 cups suit most adult dogs better than one large meal, and puppies need three or more smaller meals.
Divide the same daily calories by the new figure: at 400 kcal a cup the 40 lb dog needs 2.46 cups a day, and at 300 kcal a cup it needs 3.28 cups. The dog calorie calculator checks the calorie side either way.
