What does a $250.00 DIY win mean?
On the defaults — a $350 hood, $60 of supplies, 4 hours at $60 an hour and a $900 pro quote — the DIY cost is $650.00 and DIY wins by $250.00. The DIY cost is the hood price plus the supplies plus your hours at your hourly value: $350 + $60 + 4 × $60 = $650.00. The win is the pro cost minus the DIY cost — if the win is positive, DIY wins by that much; if the win is negative, hiring wins by that much; if the win is zero, it is an exact tie. A $250.00 saving is real money, but it is not the whole story: a pro carries insurance, guarantees the hood is level and the ducting does not leak, and takes the risk of a vent that will not fit and a hood that will not sit straight. DIY wins on price; hiring wins on risk. This calculator prices the money — you price the risk.
Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.
First, there is no division here — this is addition and multiplication, not a ratio: $350 + $60 + 4 × $60 = $650.00. Second, the meaning is two hundred and fifty dollars saved by fitting the range hood yourself — the price of your time, not the price of the hood. And third, the DIY cost is displayed to two decimals, half-up, and a DIY cost that displays as $592.23 can sit a hair below the displayed figure: a $349.95 hood, $59.40 of supplies and 3.5 hours at $52.25 an hour gives 592.225, which displays as $592.23 — all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: hood $350, supplies $60, 4 hours, $60 an hour, pro $900.
Line 1 — the DIY cost. $350 + $60 + 4 × $60 = $650.00.
Line 2 — the win. $900.00 − $650.00 = $250.00.
Line 3 — the check. At $123 an hour the DIY cost is $902.00 and hiring wins by $2.00; and at $122 an hour it is $898.00 — DIY wins by $2.00, so there is no tie.

The reverses, worked backwards
Smallest hourly value where hiring WINS: At the displayed $123 the figures are DIY $902.00; pro $900.00 — Hiring wins by $2.00. At $122 an hour the figures are DIY $898.00; pro $900.00 — DIY wins by $2.00 — no tie — so $123 an hour is the smallest hourly value where hiring wins.
Largest hourly value where DIY still wins by at least $100.00: At the displayed $97 the figures are DIY $798.00; pro $900.00 — DIY wins by $102.00. At $98 an hour the figures are DIY $802.00; pro $900.00 — DIY wins by $98.00 — DIY wins by $98.00 — below the $100.00 target — so $97 an hour is the largest hourly value where DIY still wins by at least $100.00.
Smallest hood price where hiring WINS: At the displayed $601 the figures are DIY $901.00; pro $900.00 — Hiring wins by $1.00. At $600 the figures are DIY $900.00; pro $900.00 — exact tie — a dead heat, a TIE — so $601 is the smallest hood price where hiring wins.
Smallest hours where hiring WINS: At the displayed 9 hours the figures are DIY $950.00; pro $900.00 — Hiring wins by $50.00. At 8 hours the figures are DIY $890.00; pro $900.00 — DIY wins by $10.00 — DIY wins by $10.00 — no tie — so 9 hours is the smallest hours where hiring wins.
Smallest supplies where hiring WINS: At the displayed $311 the figures are DIY $901.00; pro $900.00 — Hiring wins by $1.00. At $310 of supplies the figures are DIY $900.00; pro $900.00 — exact tie — a dead heat, a TIE — so $311 is the smallest supplies where hiring wins.
Smallest pro price where DIY WINS at all: At the displayed $651 the figures are DIY $650.00; pro $651.00 — DIY wins by $1.00. At $650 the figures are DIY $650.00; pro $650.00 — exact tie — a dead heat, a TIE — so $651 is the smallest pro price where DIY wins at all.
A warning about the ties: at $600 of hood price the DIY cost is $900.00 — a dead heat, a TIE, not a hiring win — and at $601 it is $901.00 and hiring wins by $1.00. At $310 of supplies the DIY cost is $900.00 — a dead heat, a TIE — and at $311 it is $901.00 and hiring wins by $1.00. At $650 of pro price the pro cost is $650.00 — a dead heat, a TIE, not a DIY win — and at $651 it is $651.00 and DIY wins by $1.00. There is no tie at $122 an hour, $97 an hour or 8 hours: at $122 DIY wins by $2.00 and at $123 hiring wins by $2.00; at $97 DIY wins by $102.00 and at $98 DIY wins by $98.00; at 8 hours DIY wins by $10.00 and at 9 hours hiring wins by $50.00.

With Hood $250, supplies $40, 3 hours, $50 an hour, pro $600, DIY $440.00; pro $600.00 — DIY wins by $160.00 — a small job with a cheap hood and a low pro quote. With Fractional inputs (DIY unrounded 592.225, win unrounded 157.375), DIY $592.23 (unrounded 592.225); pro $749.60 — DIY wins by $157.38 (unrounded 157.375) — the DIY cost displays as $592.23. With Hood $800, supplies $150, 6 hours, $75 an hour, pro $2,000, DIY $1,400.00; pro $2,000.00 — DIY wins by $600.00 — a big job with an expensive hood and a high pro quote. With Hood $0, supplies $30, 2 hours, $45 an hour, pro $300, DIY $120.00; pro $300.00 — DIY wins by $180.00 — a hood you already own, so the DIY cost is mostly your time.
A note on the rounding: the DIY cost is displayed to two decimals, half-up. With the fractional inputs the unrounded DIY cost is 592.225 and the unrounded win is 157.375 — they display as $592.23 and $157.38. The page prints the unrounded values so the rounding does not mislead you.

Who uses this
- The homeowner replacing a range hood: they learn a $350 hood, $60 of supplies and 4 hours at $60 an hour costs $650.00 DIY against a $900.00 pro quote — and they check the $123 reverse to see the hourly value where hiring takes the lead.
- The renter fitting a new hood: they learn the supplies are the ducting, the vent cap, the screws and the sealant, not the hood alone — and they check the $601 reverse to see the hood price where hiring wins.
- The weekend DIYer pricing their time: they learn 4 hours at $60 an hour is $240 of their own time — and they check the 9-hour reverse to see the hours where hiring wins.
- The landlord comparing quotes: they learn a $650.00 DIY cost against a $900.00 pro quote is a $250.00 win — and they check the $651 reverse to see the pro price where DIY wins at all.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the DIY cost is the hood price plus the supplies plus the hours times your hourly value, and the win is the pro cost minus the DIY cost — all in dollars, displayed to two decimals half-up. There is no division in this calculator — nothing is ever undefined. At a $600 hood price the DIY cost is $900.00 — a dead heat, a TIE, not a hiring win — and at $310 of supplies the DIY cost is $900.00 — a dead heat, a TIE. With the fractional inputs the unrounded DIY cost is 592.225 and the unrounded win is 157.375 — they display as $592.23 and $157.38. What the model cannot do is price the risk: it says nothing about a duct that will not fit, a hood that will not sit level, or a pro who guarantees the work. It also says nothing about whether the pro quote includes the hood — check that before you compare, or the comparison is wrong before it starts. Use it to see whether fitting the range hood yourself saves money — then check the bathtub, shower, sink and toilet comparisons before you decide the whole kitchen is a DIY job.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to install a range hood yourself?
On the defaults, yes — by $250.00. Fitting a range hood yourself costs $650.00 against a $900.00 pro quote. The DIY cost is the hood price plus the supplies plus your hours at your hourly value.
How do I calculate the DIY cost of a range hood installation?
Add the hood, the supplies and your time. $350 + $60 + 4 × $60 = $650.00. The pro quote is the whole job — check whether it includes the hood before you compare.
What does a $250.00 DIY win mean?
Fitting the range hood yourself saves $250.00. At a $350 hood, $60 of supplies and 4 hours at $60 an hour, the DIY cost is $650.00 against a $900.00 pro quote.
At what hourly value does hiring win?
$123 an hour. The smallest hourly value where hiring wins is $123 an hour. At $122 an hour the DIY cost is $898.00 — DIY wins by $2.00, so there is no tie.
At what hood price does hiring win?
$601. The smallest hood price where hiring wins is $601. At $600 the DIY cost is $900.00 — a dead heat, a TIE, not a hiring win.
What if the pro quote is only $650?
It is a dead heat. At a $650 pro quote the pro cost is $650.00 and the DIY cost is $650.00 — an exact tie. At $651 DIY wins by $1.00.
What is the difference between range hood installation and range hood height?
One prices the install, the other the mounting height. Range hood installation prices fitting a new range hood — the hood, the supplies and your hours — against a flat pro price. Range hood height is the hood's mounting height — 30 in above the cooktop — not the install price. Work it out in the range hood height chart.
