Dividend yield is the annual dividend divided by the share price: it tells you what the stock pays you each year for every dollar the share is worth today. Yield on cost is the same dividend divided by what you paid: it tells you what the stock pays you on the money you actually put in. On the defaults — share price $50.00, annual dividend $2.00 per share, 100 shares, cost basis $40.00 per share, growth 5% a year, 5 years — the yield is 4.00%, the annual income is $200.00, the monthly income is $16.67 and the quarterly income is $50.00. The yield on cost is 5.00%, the current value is $5,000.00, the cost is $4,000.00 and the gain is $1,000.00 (+25.00%). In five years at 5% growth the dividend is $2.55 (exact 2.5526), the annual income is $255.26 and the yield is 5.11% (exact 5.1051%).

At the defaults — share price $50.00, dividend $2.00, shares 100, cost basis $40.00, growth 5%, years 5 — the yield is 4.00%, the annual income is $200.00, the monthly income is $16.67, the quarterly income is $50.00, the yield on cost is 5.00%, the current value is $5,000.00, the cost is $4,000.00, the gain is $1,000.00, the gain is +25.00%, the year-5 dividend is $2.55, the year-5 annual income is $255.26 and the year-5 yield is 5.11%. Check the identities: yield = dividend ÷ price × 100; annual income = dividend × shares; monthly = annual ÷ 12; quarterly = annual ÷ 4; yield on cost = dividend ÷ cost basis × 100; current value = shares × price; cost = shares × cost basis; gain = value − cost; gain% = gain ÷ cost × 100; year-5 dividend = dividend × (1 + growth ÷ 100)5; year-5 annual income = year-5 dividend × shares; year-5 yield = year-5 dividend ÷ price × 100. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum.
Setup: share price $50.00, dividend $2.00, shares 100, cost basis $40.00, growth 5%, years 5.
Line 1 — the yield. $2.00 ÷ $50.00 × 100 = 4.00%.
Line 2 — the income. $2.00 × 100 = $200.00 a year; $200.00 ÷ 12 = $16.67 a month; $200.00 ÷ 4 = $50.00 a quarter.
Line 3 — the yield on cost. $2.00 ÷ $40.00 × 100 = 5.00%.
Line 4 — the position. 100 × $50.00 = $5,000.00 of value; 100 × $40.00 = $4,000.00 of cost; $5,000.00 − $4,000.00 = $1,000.00 of gain, +25.00%.
Line 5 — the 5-year projection. $2.00 × 1.055 = $2.00 × 1.2763 = $2.55 (exact 2.5526); $2.55 × 100 = $255.26 a year; $2.55 ÷ $50.00 × 100 = 5.11% (exact 5.1051%).
Reverse: the price for a 6.00% yield is $33.33 (exact 33.3333); at $33.33 the yield is 6.0006%, at $33.34 it is 5.9988%. The dividend for $500.00 of annual income is $5.00; at $5.00 the annual income is $500.00, at $4.99 it is $499.00. The shares for $1,000.00 of annual income are 500; at 500 shares the annual income is $1,000.00, at 499 shares it is $998.00. The cost basis for an 8.00% yield on cost is $25.00; at $25.00 the yield on cost is 8.0000%, at $25.01 it is 7.9968%. The growth rate for a $3.00 year-5 dividend is 8.45% (exact 8.4472%); at 8.45%% the year-5 dividend is $3.0004, at 8.44%% it is $2.9990, at 8.46%% it is $3.0018. The years for the dividend to double at 5% growth are 14.21 years (exact 14.2067); at 14.21 years the dividend is $4.0006, at 14.20 years it is $3.9987.
Share price $100: yield 2.00%, annual $200.00, monthly $16.67, yield on cost 5.00%, gain $6,000.00 (+150.00%), year-5 dividend $2.55, year-5 yield 2.55%. At $100.00 a share the same $2.00 dividend is only a 2.00% yield — the price doubled, so the yield halved, even though the income is unchanged at $200.00.
Dividend $4.00: yield 8.00%, annual $400.00, monthly $33.33, yield on cost 10.00%, gain $1,000.00 (+25.00%), year-5 dividend $5.11, year-5 yield 10.21%. At $4.00 a share the yield doubles to 8.00% and the annual income doubles to $400.00 — the yield on cost doubles too, to 10.00%.
500 shares: yield 4.00%, annual $1,000.00, monthly $83.33, yield on cost 5.00%, gain $5,000.00 (+25.00%), year-5 dividend $2.55, year-5 yield 5.11%. With 500 shares the annual income is $1,000.00 and the year-5 income is $1,276.28 — the yield is unchanged at 4.00%, because yield does not depend on how many shares you own.
Cost basis $60: yield 4.00%, annual $200.00, monthly $16.67, yield on cost 3.33%, gain -$1,000.00 (-16.67%), year-5 dividend $2.55, year-5 yield 5.11%. At a $60.00 cost basis the yield on cost falls to 3.33% and the position is $1,000.00 underwater — the dividend still pays $200.00 a year, but you paid too much for it.
No growth (0%): yield 4.00%, annual $200.00, monthly $16.67, yield on cost 5.00%, gain $1,000.00 (+25.00%), year-5 dividend $2.00, year-5 yield 4.00%. With no growth the year-5 dividend is still $2.00 and the year-5 income is still $200.00 — the yield stays 4.00% forever.
Growth 10%: yield 4.00%, annual $200.00, monthly $16.67, yield on cost 5.00%, gain $1,000.00 (+25.00%), year-5 dividend $3.22, year-5 yield 6.44%. At 10% growth the year-5 dividend is $3.22 and the year-5 income is $322.10 — the yield on today's price rises to 6.44%.
10-year projection: yield 4.00%, annual $200.00, monthly $16.67, yield on cost 5.00%, gain $1,000.00 (+25.00%), year-10 dividend $3.26, year-10 yield 6.52%. Over 10 years at 5% growth the dividend reaches $3.26 and the annual income $325.78 — the yield on today's price rises to 6.52%.
Dividend cut -10%: yield 4.00%, annual $200.00, monthly $16.67, yield on cost 5.00%, gain $1,000.00 (+25.00%), year-5 dividend $1.18, year-5 yield 2.36%. If the dividend is cut 10% a year, the year-5 dividend falls to $1.18 and the year-5 income to $118.10 — the yield on today's price falls to 2.36%.
The model assumes the dividend is paid once a year at the stated rate, with no special or one-off dividends, no dividend reinvestment, and no tax — the income figures are before tax. It assumes the growth rate applies every year, compounding, and the projection does not model dividend cuts, suspensions or price changes: the share price stays at $50.00 for the whole projection, so the year-5 yield is measured against today's price. With no dividend the yield is 0.00%, the annual income is $0.00, the monthly income is $0.00, the quarterly income is $0.00, the yield on cost is 0.00%, the year-5 dividend is $0.00, the year-5 annual income is $0.00 and the year-5 yield is 0.00%. With 0 shares the annual income is $0.00, the monthly income is $0.00, the quarterly income is $0.00, the value is $0.00, the cost is $0.00, the gain is $0.00, the gain% is — and the year-5 annual income is $0.00. With a $0.00 cost basis the yield on cost is —, the cost is $0.00, the gain is $5,000.00 and the gain% is —. A share price of $0.00 or less is a validation error — the yield cannot be calculated without a price. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum; the reverses are nearest-value solutions, and the exact unrounded figures (33.3333, 8.4472%, 14.2067, 6.0006%, 5.9988%, 8.0000%, 7.9968%, $3.0004, $2.9990, $3.0018, $4.0006, $3.9987) are stated wherever the rounded figures appear.

The math is exact arithmetic on your six inputs: yield = dividend ÷ price × 100; annual income = dividend × shares; monthly = annual ÷ 12; quarterly = annual ÷ 4; yield on cost = dividend ÷ cost basis × 100; current value = shares × price; cost = shares × cost basis; gain = value − cost; gain% = gain ÷ cost × 100; year-5 dividend = dividend × (1 + growth ÷ 100)5; year-5 annual income = year-5 dividend × shares; year-5 yield = year-5 dividend ÷ price × 100. The 4-decimal exact is shown where the rounding matters: the price for a 6.00% yield is 33.3333 (shown as $33.33); at $33.33 the yield is 6.0006%, at $33.34 it is 5.9988%. The growth rate for a $3.00 year-5 dividend is 8.4472% (shown as 8.45%); at 8.45%% the year-5 dividend is $3.0004, at 8.44%% it is $2.9990. The years for the dividend to double are 14.2067 (shown as 14.21 years); at 14.21 years the dividend is $4.0006, at 14.20 years it is $3.9987. What the model cannot do is predict the future: dividends get cut, suspended and raised, share prices move, and a high yield often means the price has fallen — not that the dividend is generous. A yield on a $0.00 cost basis is undefined, shown as —. For the total return including the price gain, see the compound growth calculator; for the tax on the dividend income, see the capital gains tax on stocks calculator; for how a split changes the per-share numbers, see the stock split calculator; for the dividend income over time, see the dividend calculator; for the retirement income the dividends fund, see the 401(k) contribution calculator. Bright Side Kit. "Dividend Yield Calculator — Free Online | Bright Side Kit" https://brightoolbox.com/dividend-yield-calculator/ Accessed October 25, 2026.Divide the annual dividend per share by the share price and multiply by 100. On the defaults — a $2.00 dividend on a $50.00 share — the yield is $2.00 ÷ $50.00 × 100 = 4.00%. The annual income on 100 shares is $200.00.
Yield on cost divides the dividend by what you paid, not by today's price. The $2.00 dividend on a $40.00 cost basis is 5.00%, against a 4.00% headline yield on the $50.00 price. If you paid $60.00, the yield on cost would be only 3.33%.
$16.67 a month — $200.00 a year, $50.00 a quarter. Monthly income is the annual income divided by 12, so $200.00 ÷ 12 = $16.67. With 500 shares the monthly income is $83.33.
$33.33. The price for a 6.00% yield is $2.00 ÷ 6% = $33.33 (exact 33.3333). At $33.33 the yield is 6.0006%; at $33.34 it is 5.9988%. A falling price raises the yield — which is why a very high yield can be a warning, not a bargain.
At 5% a year the $2.00 dividend becomes $2.55 in five years and the annual income becomes $255.26. At 10% growth the year-5 dividend is $3.22 and the income is $322.10. The dividend doubles in 14.21 years at 5% growth (exact 14.2067).
Then the yield and the income are $0.00. With a $0.00 dividend the yield is 0.00%, the annual income is $0.00 and the year-5 dividend is $0.00 — the shares pay nothing, whatever the price does.
Yes — the yield is the dividend divided by the price, so a lower price means a higher yield. At $100.00 the same $2.00 dividend is only a 2.00% yield; at $33.33 it is 6.00%. But the income is the same $200.00 either way — the yield moved because the price moved, not because the company paid more.
Then the yield on cost and the gain% are undefined, shown as —. The cost is $0.00, the gain is $5,000.00 and the dividend still pays $200.00 a year — but dividing by a $0.00 cost basis has no answer.
