What ratio is 0.75?
On the defaults — the decimal 0.75 — the ratio is 3:4, as a fraction 3/4, the parts sum is 7, and the shares are 42.86% to 57.14%. A ratio a:b means a ÷ b, so 0.75 is the ratio 3:4 because 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. The first part’s share of the whole is a ÷ (a + b) — for 3:4 that is 3 ÷ 7 = 42.86%.
Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the decimal is read exactly as typed — 0.75 becomes the fraction 75/100, not a floating-point approximation. Second, the fraction is reduced to the nearest ratio with a denominator of 1,000 or less by continued fractions — 75/100 becomes 3:4. Third, the parts sum is a + b — 3 + 4 = 7. Fourth, the first share is a ÷ (a + b) × 100 — 3 ÷ 7 × 100 = 42.86%. And fifth, the second share is b ÷ (a + b) × 100 — 4 ÷ 7 × 100 = 57.14%; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: the decimal 0.75.
Line 1 — the exact fraction. 0.75 read exactly is 75/100.
Line 2 — the ratio in lowest terms. 75/100 reduced by its greatest common divisor, 25, is 3:4 (3/4).
Line 3 — the parts sum. The parts sum is 3 + 4 = 7.
Line 4 — the shares. The first share is 3 ÷ 7 × 100 = 42.86%, and the second share is 4 ÷ 7 × 100 = 57.14%.

Who uses this
- The student simplifying a ratio: they learn 0.75 is 3:4 — and they check the 0.3333 branch to see that 0.3333 is 1:3 within the 1,000-denominator rule.
- The cook scaling a recipe: they learn 0.5 is 1:2 and 1.5 is 3:2 — and they check the 2.25 branch to see that 2.25 is 9:4.
- The teacher checking a repeating decimal: they learn 0.6667 is 2:3 — and they check the 0.9999 edge to see that 0.9999 rounds to 1:1.
- The student working backwards from a ratio: they learn the decimal for 5:3 is 1.6667 — and they check the 1:7 reverse to see that the decimal for 1:7 is 0.1429.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the decimal string is read exactly, turned into a fraction, and reduced to the nearest ratio with a denominator of 1,000 or less by continued fractions — the same rule Python’s Fraction.limit_denominator(1000) uses — and the shares are each part divided by the parts sum times 100, shown to 2 decimal places half-up. What the model cannot do is read your mind about repeating decimals: a rounded 0.3333 is only approximately 1:3, and the calculator returns the nearest simple ratio, not the repeating decimal itself — 0.9999 rounds to 1:1 because the nearest simple ratio is 1/1, not 9999:10000. Decimals with more than a few places can have several near ratios; the 1,000-denominator rule picks the nearest. Use it to turn a decimal into a ratio you can say out loud — then check the fraction against the decimal you typed.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a decimal to a ratio?
Turn the decimal into a fraction and reduce it. 0.75 is 75/100, which reduces by 25 to 3/4 — the ratio 3:4.
What does 3:4 mean?
3 divided by 4. A ratio a:b means a ÷ b, so 3:4 means 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. The shares are 42.86% to 57.14%.
Why is 0.9999 equal to 1:1?
Because the nearest simple ratio is 1/1. With a denominator of 1,000 or less, the nearest ratio to 0.9999 is 1:1 — not 9999:10000.
Is 0.3333 exactly 1:3?
Approximately. A repeating decimal 0.3333… is 1:3, but the rounded 0.3333 is only approximately 1:3 — the calculator returns the nearest simple ratio, 1:3.
What is the ratio for 0.6667?
2:3. The nearest ratio with a denominator of 1,000 or less is 2:3 — two thirds, 40.00% to 60.00%.
How do I find the decimal for a ratio?
Divide the first part by the second. For 5:3, 5 ÷ 3 = 1.6667; for 1:7, 1 ÷ 7 = 0.1429.
What are the shares of 3:4?
42.86% to 57.14%. The parts sum is 7, so the first share is 3 ÷ 7 × 100 = 42.86% and the second is 57.14%.
What is the ratio for 0.05?
1:20. 0.05 is 5/100, which reduces by 5 to 1/20 — the ratio 1:20, shares 4.76% to 95.24%.
