Buy vs Build a PC Calculator: Which Costs Less Per Year?

On the defaults — a $1,200.00 prebuilt PC over 5 years, $900.00 of parts, 6 hours of building at $25.00 an hour, and a 5-year build life — the prebuilt cost is $240.00 a year and the build cost is $210.00 a year, so building wins by $30.00 a year. Put in your own prebuilt price, parts cost, build time, and lifespans, and the calculator compares the two on cost per year and finds the build lifespan where the winner flips. The existing lease vs buy laptop calculator compares LEASING a laptop against BUYING one; the existing new vs used laptop calculator compares buying a NEW laptop against a USED one on cost per year; the existing repair vs replace laptop calculator compares fixing a laptop you own against replacing it; the existing buy new vs used car calculator is the same idea for cars — none of them compares buying a PREBUILT PC against BUILDING one yourself, and none prices your build time as a real cost. The existing guides explain the choice in words; no buy-vs-build-PC calculator exists.

Buy vs build a PC calculator

The same PC need, on both sides. Prebuilt cost per year = prebuilt PC price ÷ years you expect it to last. Build cost per year = (parts cost + your build time’s value + tools you must buy) ÷ years you expect the build to last. Your build time’s value = hours spent building × what your hour is worth. The gap = build yearly cost − prebuilt yearly cost (positive means the build costs more per year, so BUYING wins; negative means the prebuilt costs more per year, so BUILDING wins). Each yearly cost is rounded to cents first; the gap is computed from the rounded costs; a gap of exactly $0.00 is a Tie. This ignores performance per dollar (a self-built PC usually gets faster parts for the money), warranty (a prebuilt usually has one warranty for the whole machine; parts have separate warranties), the risk of a bad part or a build mistake (a prebuilt is tested before it ships), the fun of building (worth something even if the calculator charges you for the hours), and resale value at the end (a self-built PC usually resells for less as a whole machine — that favours buying and is NOT in these numbers); the parts list is your best guess, not a quote; the lifespan is your guess too — a prebuilt’s warranty and a build’s upgrade path both stretch it; all listed in Accuracy & limitations. Also: the sticker price misleads — $900 of parts looks like 25% less than a $1,200 prebuilt, but 6 hours of your time at $25 an hour is $150.00, and that closes most of the gap.

The price of the prebuilt PC — the default is $1,200.00.

How many years you expect the prebuilt PC to last — the default is 5.

What the parts for your build cost — the default is $900.00.

How many hours you will spend building — the default is 6.

What one hour of your time is worth — the default is $25.00.

Tools you must buy to build — the default is $0.00.

How many years you expect the build to last — the default is 5.

Prebuilt $1,200.00, 5 years, parts $900.00, 6 hours at $25.00/hour, tools $0.00, build 5 years: prebuilt $240.00/year, build $210.00/year, build time $150.00, gap -$30.00 (BUILDING wins by $30.00/year)Prebuilt $1,200.00, 5 years, parts $900.00, 6 hours at $25.00/hour, tools $0.00, build 5 years: prebuilt $240.00/year, build $210.00/year, build time $150.00, gap -$30.00 (BUILDING wins by $30.00/year)Prebuilt $1,200.00, 5 years, parts $900.00, 6 hours at $25.00/hour, tools $0.00, build 5 years: prebuilt $240.00/year, build $210.00/year, build time $150.00, gap -$30.00 (BUILDING wins by $30.00/year). The prebuilt cost per year is the prebuilt PC price divided by the years you expect it to last — $1,200.00 ÷ 5 = $240.00 — and the build cost per year is the parts cost plus your build time’s value plus tools, divided by the years you expect the build to last — ($900.00 + $150.00 + $0.00) ÷ 5 = $210.00. The gap is $210.00 − $240.00 = −$30.00, so building wins by $30.00 a year. The sticker price misleads — $900.00 of parts looks like 25% less than a $1,200.00 prebuilt, but 6 hours of your time at $25.00 an hour is $150.00, and that closes most of the gap.

Buy or build: the yearly cost decides

On the defaults — a $1,200.00 prebuilt PC over 5 years, $900.00 of parts, 6 hours of building at $25.00 an hour, and a 5-year build life — the prebuilt cost is $240.00 a year ($1,200.00 ÷ 5), the build cost is $210.00 a year (($900.00 + $150.00) ÷ 5), the gap is −$30.00, and building wins by $30.00 a year.

Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the prebuilt cost per year is the prebuilt PC price divided by the years you expect it to last — $1,200.00 ÷ 5 = $240.00. Second, the build cost per year is the parts cost plus your build time’s value plus tools, divided by the years you expect the build to last — ($900.00 + $150.00 + $0.00) ÷ 5 = $210.00. Third, the gap is the build yearly cost minus the prebuilt yearly cost — $210.00 − $240.00 = −$30.00 — and a negative gap means building wins. Fourth, the winner is decided from the rounded gap, and a gap of exactly $0.00 is a tie. And fifth, the sticker price misleads — the $900.00 of parts looks like 25% less than the $1,200.00 prebuilt, but 6 hours of your time at $25.00 an hour is $150.00, and that closes most of the gap; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

This calculator is part of the X vs Y comparisons library — the same compare-both-sides format as the lease vs buy laptop and buy new vs used car calculators.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: $1,200.00 prebuilt PC, 5 years, $900.00 of parts, 6 hours of building at $25.00 an hour, $0.00 of tools, 5-year build life.

Line 1 — the prebuilt side. The prebuilt cost per year is $1,200.00 ÷ 5 = $240.00.

Line 2 — the build time’s value. Your build time is worth 6 × $25.00 = $150.00.

Line 3 — the build side. The build cost per year is ($900.00 + $150.00 + $0.00) ÷ 5 = $210.00.

Line 4 — the gap. The gap is $210.00 − $240.00 = −$30.00 — negative, so building wins by $30.00 a year.

Who uses this

  • The gamer pricing a first build: they learn $900.00 of parts plus 6 hours of their time costs $210.00 a year against a $1,200.00 prebuilt’s $240.00 — and they check the $1,050.00 reverse to see the parts cost that would tie the two exactly.
  • The builder short on time: they learn 12 hours of building ties the two — and they check the 4-year reverse to see the build lifespan where the winner flips.
  • The shopper eyeing a cheap prebuilt: they learn a $900.00 prebuilt wins by $30.00 a year — and they check the $550.00 reverse to see the prebuilt price where buying wins by exactly $100.00 a year.
  • The builder with expensive parts: they learn $1,100.00 of parts flips the answer to buying by $10.00 a year — and they check the $800.00 reverse to see the parts cost where building wins by exactly $50.00 a year.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: each yearly cost is the price (plus the build time’s value and tools, for the build) divided by the lifespan, rounded to cents half-up, and the gap is the build yearly cost minus the prebuilt yearly cost from the rounded costs. The winner is decided from the rounded gap; a rounded gap of exactly $0.00 is a tie. What the model cannot do is price YOUR build’s remaining life: it ignores performance per dollar (a self-built PC usually gets faster parts for the money), warranty (a prebuilt usually has one warranty for the whole machine; parts have separate warranties), the risk of a bad part or a build mistake (a prebuilt is tested before it ships), the fun of building (worth something even if the calculator charges you for the hours), and resale value at the end (a self-built PC usually resells for less as a whole machine — that favours buying and is NOT in these numbers); the parts list is your best guess, not a quote; and the lifespan is your guess too — a prebuilt’s warranty and a build’s upgrade path both stretch it. Use it to find the build lifespan where the winner flips — then check real parts prices and prebuilt deals before you decide.

Cite this calculatorBright Side Kit. “Buy vs Build a PC Calculator: Which Costs Less Per Year?” brightoolbox.com, 2026. Method: prebuilt cost per year = prebuilt PC price ÷ years you expect it to last; build cost per year = (parts cost + your build time’s value + tools you must buy) ÷ years you expect the build to last; your build time’s value = hours spent building × what your hour is worth; gap = build yearly cost − prebuilt yearly cost (positive means the build costs more per year, so BUYING wins; negative means the prebuilt costs more per year, so BUILDING wins). Each yearly cost is rounded to cents first; the gap is computed from the rounded costs; a gap of exactly $0.00 is a Tie. Reverses: the parts cost for an exact tie is $1,050.00 (at $1,050.00 the build cost is $240.00 a year and the gap is $0.00 — an exact tie); the prebuilt price for an exact tie is $1,050.00 (at $1,050.00 the prebuilt cost is $210.00 a year and the gap is $0.00 — an exact tie); the build lifespan where the winner flips is 4 years (at 4 years the build cost is $262.50 a year and buying wins by $22.50; at 5 years the build cost is $210.00 a year and building wins by $30.00); the parts cost for BUILDING to win by exactly $50.00/year is $800.00 (exact 800.0000; at $800.00 the build cost is $190.00 a year and the gap is −$50.00 — exact); the prebuilt price for BUYING to win by exactly $100.00/year is $550.00 (exact 550.0000; at $550.00 the prebuilt cost is $110.00 a year and the gap is $100.00 — BUYING wins by $100.00, exact); the build time for an exact tie (at $25.00 an hour) is 12 hours (at 12 hours the time value is $300.00, the build cost is $240.00 a year, and the gap is $0.00 — an exact tie). Defaults: Prebuilt $1,200.00, 5 years, parts $900.00, 6 hours at $25.00/hour, tools $0.00, build 5 years: prebuilt $240.00/year, build $210.00/year, build time $150.00, gap -$30.00 (BUILDING wins by $30.00/year) Bright Side Kit. Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to buy or build a PC?

Building wins by $30.00 a year on the defaults. A $1,200.00 prebuilt PC over 5 years costs $240.00 a year; building one from $900.00 of parts plus 6 hours of your time costs $210.00 a year.

What parts cost ties a $1,200 prebuilt?

$1,050.00. At $1,050.00 of parts the build cost is $240.00 a year — an exact tie with the prebuilt’s $240.00 a year.

How long must a build last to win?

5 years on the defaults. At 4 years of build life buying wins by $22.50 a year; at 5 years building wins by $30.00 a year — the flip happens between 4 and 5 years.

Why count my build time as a cost?

Because the hours are real. Six hours at $25.00 an hour is $150.00 — without it, the build looks $90.00 a year cheaper than it really is.

What prebuilt price makes buying win by $100.00 a year?

$550.00. The exact prebuilt price is 550.0000; at $550.00 the prebuilt cost is $110.00 a year and the gap is $100.00.

What if the parts cost $1,100?

Buying wins by $10.00 a year. At $1,100.00 of parts the build cost is $250.00 a year against the prebuilt’s $240.00.

What does the comparison leave out?

Performance per dollar, warranty, build risk, the fun of building, and resale value. A self-built PC usually gets faster parts for the money, but it usually resells for less as a whole machine — that favours buying and is NOT in these numbers.

How many hours of building tie the two?

12 hours at $25.00 an hour. At 12 hours the time value is $300.00 and the build cost is $240.00 a year — an exact tie.
