What do my blood sugar numbers mean?
On the defaults — fasting glucose 95 mg/dL, two-hour glucose 165 mg/dL and A1C 6.8% — the fasting glucose is Normal, the two-hour glucose is Prediabetes and the A1C is Diabetes: one normal, one prediabetes, one diabetes. A diabetes panel reports three numbers: fasting glucose in mg/dL (after at least 8 hours without food), glucose two hours after eating in mg/dL, and A1C as a percentage (average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months). The standard bands come from the American Diabetes Association. A single high reading does not diagnose anything — doctors repeat the test before diagnosing. This page is educational only, not medical advice — talk to a clinician about any result.
Five things about the chart are worth stating plainly. First, fasting glucose is judged on its own band: under 100 is Normal, 100–125 is Prediabetes, 126 and over is Diabetes — 95 is Normal. Second, two-hour glucose has its own higher bands: under 140 is Normal, 140–199 is Prediabetes, 200 and over is Diabetes — 165 is Prediabetes. Third, A1C is a percentage with one decimal place: under 5.7% is Normal, 5.7–6.4% is Prediabetes, 6.5% and over is Diabetes — 6.8% is Diabetes. Fourth, the three numbers can disagree — one normal, one prediabetes, one diabetes is a common mixed picture, and no single number is the whole story. And fifth, bands are inclusive at the low end — fasting 100 is already Prediabetes, 99 is Normal; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: fasting glucose 95 mg/dL, two-hour glucose 165 mg/dL, A1C 6.8%.
Line 1 — fasting glucose. 95 falls in under 100, so the fasting glucose is Normal.
Line 2 — two-hour glucose. 165 falls in 140–199, so the two-hour glucose is Prediabetes.
Line 3 — A1C. 6.8% falls in 6.5% and over, so the A1C is Diabetes.
Line 4 — the picture. One normal, one prediabetes, one diabetes: fasting Normal, two-hour Prediabetes, A1C Diabetes.

Who uses this
- The person who just got a lab report with fasting 95, two-hour 165 and A1C 6.8%: they learn one number is Normal, one is Prediabetes and one is Diabetes — and they check the 100 / 140 / 5.7% floor to see all three turn Prediabetes at once.
- The person watching a fasting number near 100: they learn 99 is Normal but 100 is already Prediabetes — and they check the 126 reverse to see the fasting number for Diabetes.
- The person tracking A1C: they learn 6.8% is Diabetes, 6.4% is Prediabetes and 5.6% is Normal — and they check the 6.5% reverse to see the A1C where Diabetes starts.
- The person checking a two-hour number after a meal: they learn 165 is Prediabetes, 139 is Normal and 200 is Diabetes — and they check the all-best edge to see what three Normal numbers look like.
Accuracy & limitations
The chart is first-principles: each reading is compared against the standard American Diabetes Association bands, inclusive at the low end, and A1C is shown with one decimal place. What the chart cannot do is diagnose anything: a single high reading does not diagnose diabetes — doctors repeat the test before diagnosing; the bands are population cut-offs, not a verdict on one person; fasting means at least 8 hours without food, and a snack in between changes the fasting number; A1C is an average over 2–3 months, so it hides day-to-day swings; and home meters and lab tests can differ by a few points. Frequently asked questions
What is a normal fasting blood sugar?
Under 100 mg/dL. Fasting glucose under 100 is Normal, 100–125 is Prediabetes and 126 and over is Diabetes. Fasting 95 is Normal; fasting 100 is already Prediabetes.
What is a normal blood sugar two hours after eating?
Under 140 mg/dL. Two-hour glucose under 140 is Normal, 140–199 is Prediabetes and 200 and over is Diabetes. Two-hour 165 is Prediabetes; two-hour 139 is Normal.
What is a normal A1C?
Under 5.7%. A1C under 5.7% is Normal, 5.7–6.4% is Prediabetes and 6.5% and over is Diabetes. A1C 6.8% is Diabetes; A1C 5.6% is Normal.
What does it mean if one number is diabetes and the others are not?
A mixed picture is common. On the defaults the fasting glucose is Normal, the two-hour glucose is Prediabetes and the A1C is Diabetes — one of each. No single number is the whole story, and a single high reading does not diagnose anything.
What are the three numbers on a diabetes panel?
Fasting glucose, two-hour glucose, and A1C. Fasting glucose in mg/dL after at least 8 hours without food, glucose two hours after eating in mg/dL, and A1C as a percentage — average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months.
Is 100 fasting blood sugar prediabetes?
Yes. Bands are inclusive at the low end: fasting 100 mg/dL is already Prediabetes, and fasting 99 mg/dL is Normal.
What A1C means diabetes?
6.5% and over. A1C 6.5% is already Diabetes; A1C 6.4% is Prediabetes. A1C is a percentage with one decimal place.
