Bath vs shower — 25-year water and heating cost

A bath and a shower are the same job — getting clean — but they use very different amounts of water, and water is what you pay for twice: once to bring it in and once to heat it. A bath is a fixed tub of water, about 50 gallons. A shower is a flow rate times a length: 2.1 gallons a minute for 8 minutes is 16.8 gallons, about a third of a bath. This calculator prices both by the gallon, adds up a year and 25 years of washes, and works out how long a shower can run before it costs more than a bath.

How many times a week you wash, bath or shower. One wash a day is 7 a week, or 364 washes a year. The default is 7.

How many gallons of water a bath uses. A standard tub holds about 50 gallons when filled to the overflow. The default is 50 gallons.

How many gallons a minute the shower head puts out. A modern low-flow head is about 2.1 gallons a minute; older heads are 2.5 or more. The default is 2.1 gal/min.

How long the shower runs, in minutes. An average shower is about 8 minutes. The default is 8 minutes.

What one gallon of hot water costs, in dollars, covering the water, the sewer and the heating together. About $0.03 a gallon is typical. The default is $0.03.

How the bath vs shower comparison works

A wash has two costs and one winner. The cost per wash is the gallons times the price per gallon, and the price per gallon covers the water, the sewer and the heating together. A bath is a fixed tub of water: 50 gallons times $0.03 is $1.50 a bath. A shower is a flow rate times a length: 2.1 gallons a minute for 8 minutes is 16.8 gallons, and 16.8 times $0.03 is $0.504 a shower, shown as $0.50. The annual cost is the washes a year times the cost per wash, and the 25-year total is the annual cost times 25. The upfront is $0 against $0, a tie, because both fixtures are assumed already installed, so the whole comparison is running cost, and the net cost is the gross cost.

At the defaults — 7 washes a week, bath 50 gallons, shower 2.1 gal/min for 8 minutes, $0.03 a gallon — the shower water is 2.1 × 8 = 16.8 gallons, the cost per bath is 50 × $0.03 = $1.50 and the cost per shower is 16.8 × $0.03 = $0.504. The washes a year are 7 × 52 = 364, so the annual bath cost is 364 × $1.50 = $546.00 and the annual shower cost is 364 × $0.504 = $183.46. Over 25 years that is $13,650.00 against $4,586.40, so the shower wins by $9,063.60, and it saves 18,200 − 6,115.2 = 12,084.8 gallons of water a year.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 7 washes a week; bath 50 gallons; shower 2.1 gal/min for 8 minutes; $0.03 a gallon; 25-year horizon.

Line 1 — the shower water. 2.1 × 8 = 16.8 gallons a shower.

Line 2 — the cost per wash. Bath: 50 × $0.03 = $1.50. Shower: 16.8 × $0.03 = $0.504, shown as $0.50; the annual and 25-year figures are computed from the unrounded $0.504, not from $0.50.

Line 3 — the washes a year. 7 × 52 = 364 washes.

Line 4 — the annual cost. Bath: 364 × $1.50 = $546.00. Shower: 364 × $0.504 = $183.46.

Line 5 — the 25-year total. Bath: $546.00 × 25 = $13,650.00. Shower: $183.46 × 25 = $4,586.40. The shower wins by $9,063.60.

Line 6 — the water and the break-even. Bath water a year is 364 × 50 = 18,200 gallons; shower water a year is 364 × 16.8 = 6,115.2 gallons, so showering saves 12,084.8 gallons a year. A shower longer than 50 ÷ 2.1 = 23.81 minutes costs more than a bath, and a bath smaller than 16.8 gallons costs less than a shower.

Every branch, checked

3 uses a week: the washes a year are 3 × 52 = 156, so the annual bath cost is 156 × $1.50 = $234.00 and the annual shower cost is 156 × $0.504 = $78.62; over 25 years that is $5,850.00 against $1,965.60, and the shower wins by $3,884.40. Fewer washes shrink every number, but the winner is the same at every frequency.

Bath 70 gallons: the cost per bath is 70 × $0.03 = $2.10, so the annual bath cost is 364 × $2.10 = $764.40 and the 25-year bath total is $19,110.00, so the shower wins by $14,523.60. A deep bath is the dearest wash of all: 70 gallons is four baths' worth of shower water.

12-minute shower: the shower water is 2.1 × 12 = 25.2 gallons, so the cost per shower is 25.2 × $0.03 = $0.76, the annual shower cost is 364 × $0.756 = $275.18 and the 25-year shower total is $6,879.60, so the shower wins by $6,770.40. A long shower is still cheaper than a bath, but it gives back a third of the saving.

$0.05 a gallon: the cost per bath is 50 × $0.05 = $2.50 and the cost per shower is 16.8 × $0.05 = $0.84, so the annual costs are $910.00 against $305.76 and the 25-year totals are $22,750.00 against $7,644.00, and the shower wins by $15,106.00. Dear water widens the gap in dollars, because the bath wastes more of it.

14 uses a week: the washes a year are 14 × 52 = 728, so the annual bath cost is 728 × $1.50 = $1,092.00 and the annual shower cost is 728 × $0.504 = $366.91; over 25 years that is $27,300.00 against $9,172.80, and the shower wins by $18,127.20. Two washes a day doubles every number, and the saving with it.

Reverse — the break-even shower length: a shower costs the same as a bath when its water matches the bath: 50 ÷ 2.1 = 23.81 minutes. Shower longer than that and the bath is cheaper. The other way round, a bath smaller than 16.8 gallons costs less than an 8-minute shower — which is a shallow bath, not a full one.

What the defaults assume

The model counts running cost only: the upfront is $0 against $0, a tie, because both fixtures are assumed already installed, so the whole comparison is water, sewer and heating. It assumes the price per gallon covers the water, the sewer and the heating together, which is right for a combined bill but not for a bill that splits them. It assumes the shower flow is steady: a shower that starts cold and runs while it warms up uses more water than the minutes suggest. It assumes the bath is filled to the overflow: a half-filled bath uses half the water and half the money. It leaves out the cost of the tub, the shower head, the water heater, the soap and the cleaning — ask the plumber whether the quote includes those. Rounding convention: money is rounded to cents, the shower cost per wash is computed from the unrounded $0.504 and shown as $0.50, and all figures are computed from unrounded values, rounded only for display.

Who uses this

  • The homeowner choosing between a bath and a shower: they learn showering costs $4,586.40 over 25 years against $13,650.00 for bathing — and the shower saves 12,084.8 gallons of water a year, so the cheaper wash is also the greener one.
  • The landlord fitting out a rental bathroom: they learn a bath costs $546.00 a year in water and heating against $183.46 for a shower — so they fit the shower, knowing the tenant's long baths are not their bill.
  • The family with a teenager who showers for 20 minutes: they learn a 12-minute shower already costs $275.18 a year — and a shower past 23.81 minutes costs more than a bath, so the timer on the wall pays for itself.
  • The homeowner on metered water: they learn dear water widens the gap — at $0.05 a gallon the shower wins by $15,106.00 over 25 years — so they check the metered rate before they decide.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the shower water is the flow times the minutes, the cost per wash is the gallons times the price per gallon, and the annual and 25-year totals are the washes a year times the cost per wash. What the model cannot do is measure your tub or your shower head for you: a deep tub holds 70 gallons, not 50, and an old shower head can put out 2.5 gallons a minute, not 2.1. It leaves out the tub, the shower head, the water heater, the soap and the cleaning — ask the plumber whether the quote includes those. It assumes the price per gallon covers the water, the sewer and the heating together, and that the shower flow is steady from the first minute. For the tub itself, see bathtub size chart; for the heater that warms the water, see water heater size chart; for the same comparison with different numbers, see shower vs bath cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bath or a shower cheaper?

A shower is cheaper by $9,063.60 over 25 years. At one wash a day, a bath costs $546.00 a year and a shower costs $183.46 a year, so over 25 years that is $13,650.00 against $4,586.40. The shower is also cheaper upfront: $0 against $0, a tie, because both fixtures are already installed.

How much does a bath cost in water?

$1.50 a bath. A standard bath uses 50 gallons, and at $0.03 a gallon for the water, the sewer and the heating together, that is 50 × $0.03 = $1.50. At one wash a day that is $546.00 a year.

How much does a shower cost in water?

$0.50 a shower. An 8-minute shower at 2.1 gallons a minute uses 16.8 gallons, and 16.8 × $0.03 = $0.504, shown as $0.50. At one wash a day that is $183.46 a year, computed from the unrounded $0.504.

How much water does a bath use compared to a shower?

A bath uses 50 gallons against a shower's 16.8. Over a year at one wash a day, the bath uses 18,200 gallons and the shower uses 6,115.2 gallons, so showering saves 12,084.8 gallons of water a year.

How long can I shower before it costs more than a bath?

23.81 minutes. A shower costs the same as a bath when its water matches the bath: 50 ÷ 2.1 = 23.81 minutes. Shower longer than that and the bath is cheaper. A 12-minute shower is still well under the line, at $0.76 a wash.

What if I only wash 3 times a week?

The shower still wins, by $3,884.40. At 3 washes a week the annual costs are $234.00 for a bath against $78.62 for a shower, and over 25 years that is $5,850.00 against $1,965.60. Fewer washes shrink every number, but the winner is the same.

What if my bath holds 70 gallons?

The bath costs $2.10 a wash. A 70-gallon bath at $0.03 a gallon is $2.10 a wash, $764.40 a year and $19,110.00 over 25 years, so the shower wins by $14,523.60. A deep bath is the dearest wash of all.

What if water costs $0.05 a gallon?

The shower wins by $15,106.00. At $0.05 a gallon the bath costs $2.50 a wash and $910.00 a year, and the shower costs $0.84 a wash and $305.76 a year, so over 25 years that is $22,750.00 against $7,644.00. Dear water widens the gap, because the bath wastes more of it.
