How baking measurements convert
On the defaults — 2 cups of all-purpose flour — the weight is 240.00 g, because one US cup of all-purpose flour is 120 g. The whole calculation is one move: grams are cups times the grams in one cup for the chosen ingredient, and cups are grams divided by the grams in one cup. Pick the ingredient first — the grams per cup change everything.
Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the grams in one US cup are standard published reference values for the spoon-and-level measuring method — all-purpose flour 120 g, bread flour 127 g, granulated sugar 200 g, brown sugar (packed) 220 g, powdered sugar 120 g, butter 227 g, cocoa powder 84 g, honey 340 g, milk 245 g, water 237 g, rolled oats 90 g, chocolate chips 170 g. Second, a scooped cup of flour can weigh about 10% more than a spooned-and-levelled one — the chart is the spoon-and-level value. Third, brown sugar depends on how firmly it is packed — the chart value is packed. Fourth, butter is 227 g because one US cup is two sticks — 8 tablespoons, 4 oz each. And fifth, the calculator converts by the table value, not by weighing your actual ingredients — for exact work, weigh the ingredient.

The worked example, line by line
Setup: 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 120 g per cup.
Line 1 — look up the grams per cup. One US cup of all-purpose flour is 120 g.
Line 2 — multiply by the cups. The weight is 2 × 120 = 240.00 g.
Line 3 — check the reverse. Back the other way, 240 g of all-purpose flour is 240 ÷ 120 = 2.00 cups. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a hundredth from their rounded sum.
Every branch, checked
Bread flour, 1 cup: 1 cups of bread flour = 127.00 g (127 g per cup) — a little heavier than all-purpose flour: 127 g against 120 g.
Granulated sugar, 1 cup: 1 cups of granulated sugar = 200.00 g (200 g per cup) — sugar is dense: a cup is 200 g.
Butter, 1 cup: 1 cups of butter = 227.00 g (227 g per cup) — one cup is two sticks, 227 g.
Honey, 0.5 cup: 0.5 cups of honey = 170.00 g (340 g per cup) — half a cup of honey is 170 g — honey is the heaviest thing in the chart per cup.
Cocoa powder, 2 cups: 2 cups of cocoa powder = 168.00 g (84 g per cup) — cocoa is light: two cups are only 168 g.
Rolled oats, 3 cups: 3 cups of rolled oats = 270.00 g (90 g per cup) — three cups of oats are 270 g.
Milk, 1.5 cups: 1.5 cups of milk = 367.50 g (245 g per cup) — a cup and a half of milk is 367.50 g.
The reverses, worked backwards
Cups of all-purpose flour for 500 g: 4.17 cups — the exact cups are 4.1667. At the displayed 4.17 cups the weight is 500.40 g, 0.40 g over the 500 g target — rounding. 4.16 cups gives 499.20 g. The star is CUPS.
Cups of granulated sugar for 1,000 g: 5.00 cups — the exact cups are 5.0000. At the displayed 5.00 cups the weight is 1,000.00 g (exact). The star is CUPS.
Cups of butter for at least 500 g: 2.25 cups — the smallest quarter-cup step that clears 500 g. At 2.25 cups the weight is 510.75 g; 2.00 cups gives 454.00 g. This is a step reverse: butter is measured in quarter-cup steps here, so there is no exact in-between. The star is CUPS.
Cups of honey for 100 g: 0.29 cups — the exact cups are 0.2941. At the displayed 0.29 cups the weight is 98.60 g, 1.40 g under the 100 g target — rounding. 0.30 cups gives 102.00 g. The star is CUPS.
Cups of cocoa powder for 250 g: 2.98 cups — the exact cups are 2.9762. At the displayed 2.98 cups the weight is 250.32 g, 0.32 g over the 250 g target — rounding. 2.97 cups gives 249.48 g. The star is CUPS.
Cups of chocolate chips for 500 g: 2.94 cups — the exact cups are 2.9412. At the displayed 2.94 cups the weight is 499.80 g, 0.20 g under the 500 g target — rounding. 2.95 cups gives 501.50 g. The star is CUPS.
What the defaults assume
The defaults are all-purpose flour, 2 cups — 240.00 g. With 0 cups of flour, 0 cups of all-purpose flour = 0.00 g (120 g per cup) — nothing weighs nothing. With 10 cups of flour, 10 cups of all-purpose flour = 1,200.00 g (120 g per cup) — a big batch. With 0.25 cup of granulated sugar, 0.25 cups of granulated sugar = 50.00 g (200 g per cup) — a quarter cup is 50 g. With 100 g of water, 100.00 g of water = 0.42 cups (237 g per cup) — the reverse direction: grams back to cups (0.4219 cups exact; at 0.42 cups the weight is 99.54 g). With 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1 cups of powdered sugar = 120.00 g (120 g per cup) — the same weight as flour, 120 g, even though the volume is the same. With 5 cups of brown sugar, 5 cups of brown sugar, packed = 1,100.00 g (220 g per cup) — packed, 220 g a cup. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a hundredth from their rounded sum.

Who uses this
- The baker doubling a recipe: they learn 2 cups of flour are 240.00 g and 3 cups of oats are 270.00 g — and they check the 4.17-cup reverse to see how many cups 500 g of flour is.
- The scale baker: they learn 500 g of flour is 4.17 cups and 1,000 g of sugar is 5.00 cups — and they check the 0.29-cup reverse to see how little honey 100 g really is.
- The honey measurer: they learn half a cup of honey is 170.00 g — and they check the 2.25-cup step to see how much butter it takes to reach 500 g.
- The butter converter: they learn one cup of butter is 227 g — two sticks — and they check the 2.94-cup reverse to see how many cups 500 g of chocolate chips is.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: grams are cups times the grams in one cup for the chosen ingredient; cups are grams divided by the grams in one cup. Every figure is rounded to hundredths half-up, and the totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a hundredth from their rounded sum. What the model cannot do is tell you what YOUR cup weighs: the chart values are standard averages for the spoon-and-level measuring method, and a scooped cup of flour can weigh about 10% more; brown sugar depends on how firmly it is packed; cocoa powder settles and compacts; honey clings to the cup, so a weighed amount is more accurate than a measured one; and the values are for US cups — a metric cup is 250 ml, not 236.6 ml, so a metric cup of flour is about 127 g, not 120 g. For exact work, weigh the ingredient — the chart is the starting point, not the scale.

Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of flour?
120 g for all-purpose flour. One US cup of all-purpose flour is 120 g, so 2 cups are 240.00 g. Bread flour is a little heavier at 127 g a cup.
How many cups is 500 g of flour?
4.17 cups. The exact figure is 4.1667 cups: at 4.17 cups the weight is 500.40 g, 0.40 g over the 500 g target, because the cups are rounded. At 4.16 cups it is 499.20 g.
How many grams are in a cup of butter?
227 g. One US cup of butter is two sticks — 8 tablespoons, 4 oz each — so a cup is 227 g. To reach 500 g of butter takes 2.25 cups.
How do I convert grams back to cups?
Divide the grams by the grams in one cup for the ingredient. For water, 100 g ÷ 237 g per cup = 0.42 cups; at 0.42 cups the weight is 99.54 g. Pick the direction in the calculator to convert either way.
Why does a cup of flour weigh more when I scoop it?
Scooping packs the flour down. The chart values are for the spoon-and-level method: spoon the flour into the cup and level it off. A scooped cup can weigh about 10% more — around 132 g instead of 120 g. For exact work, weigh it.
How many grams are in a cup of honey?
340 g. Honey is the heaviest ingredient in the chart per cup: half a cup is 170.00 g, and 100 g of honey is only 0.29 cups.
