Backer Board Chart: 30 Sheets for 400 Sq Ft at 10% Waste

On the defaults — 400 square feet at 10% waste with 15 square feet per sheet coverage — you need 440.00 square feet of backer board, 29.33 sheets exact, so order 30 sheets. This is the BACKER-BOARD version — area times waste divided by coverage, with a lookup table for every common area and coverage — the drywall-chart page is the SHEET version — the same divide-and-round-up model counted in drywall sheets; the mortar-chart page is the MORTAR version — the same model counted in bags; the paint-chart page is the PAINT version — the same model counted in topcoat gallons; and the primer-chart page is the PRIMER version — the same model counted in primer gallons.

Backer board chart

Put your area, coverage per sheet and waste allowance in: 400 sq ft at 10% waste needs 29.33 sheets exact, order 30.

How many square feet you need to cover, all surfaces added together — 400 on the defaults. Measure every wall, floor and return and add them; this page does the waste, division and rounding.

How many square feet one sheet of backer board covers — 15 on the defaults, the figure for a 3-by-5-foot sheet. A different sheet size covers a different area, so enter your own figure if your sheets differ.

The extra percentage added for cuts, breakage and fitting around fixtures — 10% on the defaults. This is waste only, not a second layer: a second layer doubles the area, it does not raise the waste percentage.

Sheets needed (440.00 sq ft ÷ 15 sq ft per sheet)29.33 sheets — order 30400 × 1.10 = 440.00 sq ft; 440.00 ÷ 15 = 29.33 sheets exact, order 30 sheets. Sheets are area times the waste factor, divided by coverage, rounded up to order.

What does 29.33 sheets, order 30, mean?

It means that 400 square feet of surface, with a 10% waste allowance, need 440.00 square feet of backer board, and at 15 square feet per sheet that is 29.33 sheets — twenty-nine full sheets plus a third of a thirtieth — and because backer board is sold by the sheet, you order 30. The rounding is the whole story in miniature: a partial sheet cannot be bought in the quantity needed, so any fraction, however small, becomes a whole sheet. The part people get wrong is rounding to the nearest sheet instead of up: 29.33 rounded to the nearest is 29 here, and 29 sheets cover only 435 square feet, leaving 5.00 square feet without board. The other part people get wrong is the exact fit: 440 square feet of coverage need exactly 1.00 sheet at 440 square feet per sheet, and order exactly 1, because the rounding is up to the next whole sheet, not up plus one — an exact fit needs no spare sheet from the rounding, though a spare for breakage is a separate decision.

Three things to check before you trust the number

Is 15 square feet per sheet right for your board? Fifteen square feet is the figure this page uses, and it is the area of a 3-by-5-foot sheet, the common backer-board size. A 4-by-8-foot sheet covers 32 square feet, so the same 400 square feet at 32 square feet per sheet would need 13.75 sheets, order 14, not 30 — sheet size changes the count completely, even though the area and waste are unchanged. Enter the coverage of the sheet you will actually buy, measured as its length times its width, rather than trusting the default for a different size.

Did you measure every surface? The area entered here must be the total of all surfaces, not the largest single wall or floor: a room with 400 square feet of floor plus shower walls, niches and returns has more than 400 square feet to cover. The 200-square-foot branch needs 14.67 sheets, order 15, against the 29.33-sheet headline, so missing one section understates the order by whole sheets on a bigger job. Measure every surface, add them before dividing, and do not subtract small gaps unless your board maker says to.

Are you counting waste, or a second layer? This page adds 10% for waste — cuts, breakage and fitting around fixtures — and that is not a second layer. A second layer doubles the area first: 400 square feet twice-covered is 800 square feet before waste, which is 880.00 square feet with waste and 58.67 sheets, order 59. Treating a second layer as waste, or waste as a second layer, misstates the order by whole sheets either way, so decide the layers first and let the waste percentage stay at waste.

Worked example

On the defaults: 400 square feet, 15 square feet per sheet, 10% waste.

  1. Needed area: 400 × 1.10 is 440.00 square feet.
  2. Exact sheets: 440.00 ÷ 15 is 29.33 sheets.
  3. Order: 29.33 rounded up is 30 sheets — the 0.33 is a third of a sheet that must be bought whole.
  4. Check: 30 sheets cover 450 square feet, which is more than the 440.00 needed; 29 sheets cover only 435, which is not enough.

And the other way: the area behind 29.33 sheets is 400 square feet, the coverage behind 29.33 sheets is 15 square feet per sheet, and the waste behind 29.33 sheets is 10%. A job at 440 square feet per sheet orders exactly 1 sheet, and the 400-square-foot, 20-square-feet-per-sheet lookup row lands exactly on 22.00 sheets, order 22.

What the defaults assume

The defaults are 400 square feet, 15 square feet per sheet and 10% waste, so the headline is one layer of 3-by-5-foot backer board over a medium room. The model is a multiplication, a division and a ceiling: needed area is area times one plus the waste percentage, exact sheets are needed area divided by coverage per sheet, and the order rounds exact sheets up to the next whole sheet, with a 1e-12 epsilon so an exact whole number orders exactly that many. Sheet sizes differ — the 15-square-feet figure is for a 3-by-5-foot sheet, and a 4-by-8-foot sheet covers 32 square feet, so enter the coverage for the sheet you will actually buy. The area reverse is checked at 50 square feet either side, because 50 square feet at 10% waste is 55 square feet, about 3.67 sheets; the coverage reverse is checked at 5 square feet either side, because 440.00 over 10 is 44.00 sheets and over 20 is 22.00; the waste reverse is checked at 5% either side, because 5% of 400 is 20 square feet, about 1.33 sheets. The model does not include second layers, board thickness differences beyond the coverage figure, fasteners, tape and thinset, or tools — count those separately.

Lookup table: sheets by area and coverage

Each row already includes the 10% waste allowance: needed area is the area times 1.10, exact sheets are needed area divided by the coverage in that row, and the order column rounds up. A row that lands exactly on a whole number orders exactly that many — no extra sheet is added for an exact fit. For a different sheet size, enter your own coverage in the calculator above: a larger sheet covers more feet, so the order falls.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

Figures are the model’s own arithmetic on the numbers you type, computed from unrounded values and displayed rounded HALF_UP to 2dp, with orders rounded up using a 1e-12 epsilon so exact fits are not over-ordered. The main limitation is the coverage figure, not the arithmetic: sheet sizes differ — 15 square feet for a 3-by-5-foot sheet, 32 for a 4-by-8-foot sheet — so check your product and enter your own figure when your sheets differ. This page is a calculation tool, not trade advice — follow the board maker’s instructions for fastening, taping and waterproofing.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does one sheet of backer board cover?

This page uses 15 square feet per sheet, which is the area of a 3-by-5-foot sheet. A 4-by-8-foot sheet covers 32 square feet, so the same 400 square feet at 32 square feet per sheet needs 13.75 sheets, order 14 — the calculator divides by whatever you enter, so the answer stays honest for your sheet size.

Is backer board the same as drywall?

No, though both are sold as sheets and both use the same divide-and-round-up arithmetic: backer board is a cement or fibre-cement panel made for wet areas under tile, while drywall is a gypsum panel for dry rooms. The board type changes the product and the fixing method, not the sheet count, which is why the coverage figure, not the product name, decides the order.

Why add 10% waste?

Because board is lost to cuts, breakage and fitting around fixtures: the 10% allowance covers the board that never ends up as a finished surface. Without it, a job that computes to exactly 29.00 sheets would run dry on the last stretch of wall, and the waste percentage is what keeps the order honest for real fitting.

Why round up instead of to the nearest sheet?

Because a partial sheet cannot be bought in the quantity needed, and rounding down leaves surface uncovered: 29.33 sheets rounded to the nearest is 29, and 29 sheets cover only 435 of the 440.00 square feet needed. Rounding up guarantees the whole area is covered; the extra fraction is the price of buying whole sheets.

What if the exact figure is already a whole number?

Then you order exactly that many: a job at 440 square feet per sheet needs exactly 1.00 sheet and orders 1, not 2, and the epsilon in the rounding protects exact fits, so a job that lands on a whole number is not charged an extra sheet for nothing.

Does the waste allowance cover a second layer?

No: waste and layers are different things. Waste is the extra 10% for cuts, breakage and fitting on one layer; a second layer doubles the area first, so 400 square feet twice-covered is 800 square feet before waste, which is 880.00 square feet with waste and 58.67 sheets, order 59. Decide the layers first, then let waste stay at waste.
