Air fryer vs oven — the yearly cooking math

Cooking the same meal can cost more than three times as much in a full oven as in an air fryer. The model is stated plainly: an air fryer at 1500 watts for 20 minutes including preheat, against a full oven at 2400 watts for 45 minutes including preheat. Enter your own habits and the calculator works out both appliances side by side.

Five uses a week is 260 uses a year; every cost below scales with this number.

At 1500 watts for 20 minutes, each air fryer use costs 0.500 kWh.

Twenty minutes at 1500 watts is 0.500 kWh per use.

At 2400 watts, the oven draws 60 percent more power than the air fryer, and it runs more than twice as long.

Forty-five minutes at 2400 watts is 1.800 kWh per use — preheat is a large part of it.

At $0.17 per kWh, the air fryer costs $22.10 a year and the oven $79.56.

Air fryer saving per year$57.46Air fryer $22.10 a year vs oven $79.56 a year. The air fryer saves $57.46 a year at 5 uses a week.

Air fryer: 130.0 kWh, $22.10 a year

Oven: 468.0 kWh, $79.56 a year

Uses: 260 uses a year, 0.500 kWh per air fryer use vs 1.800 kWh per oven use

Saving: $57.46 a year

The air fryer saves $57.46 a year at the settings above. Air fryer $22.10 a year vs oven $79.56 a year.

3 uses a week: air fryer $13.26 vs oven $47.74 a year, a saving of $34.48.

7 uses a week: air fryer $30.94 vs oven $111.38 a year, a saving of $80.44.

Electricity at $0.30 per kWh: air fryer $39.00 vs oven $140.40 a year, a saving of $101.40.

Short oven cycle of 30 minutes: oven 1.200 kWh per use, 312.0 kWh a year, $53.04 a year, a saving of $30.94.

Why the gap is so big

Two things multiply against the oven: higher wattage and longer run time. The air fryer draws 1500 watts for 20 minutes, or 0.500 kWh per use. The oven draws 2400 watts for 45 minutes including preheat, or 1.800 kWh per use — more than three and a half times as much energy for the same meal. Over 260 uses a year that becomes 130.0 kWh against 468.0 kWh, and at $0.17 per kWh the bill is $22.10 against $79.56. The air fryer is not magic; it is simply a small, fast-heating box, while the oven heats a large cavity, racks, and trays before it ever starts cooking your food. Preheat alone is a large share of the oven's cost, which is why the oven's per-use figure stays high even for short cooks.

When the oven still wins

The air fryer wins on small batches, and the oven wins for large batches — that is the whole rule in one sentence. An air fryer basket holds one or two portions comfortably; cramming in a family dinner means cooking in two or three rounds, and two air fryer rounds at 0.500 kWh each already cost more than a single oven cycle shared across the whole tray. The oven also wins for anything too big for a basket: a whole turkey, a large roast, several baking trays at once, or a pizza wider than the basket. And for dishes that need a large, even baking surface — big casseroles, sheet-pan dinners for six — one oven cycle beats repeated small ones on both cost and convenience. Use the air fryer for weeknight portions for one to three people; use the oven when the batch is the point, and accept that those cooks cost more. Who uses this

  • The weeknight cook for one or two: air-fries most dinners and wants to know whether the habit actually saves anything measurable — at 5 uses a week, it saves $57.46 a year.
  • The household cutting its power bill: looks for the cheapest wins first, and checks whether switching small-batch cooking to the air fryer beats pricier changes like a new appliance.
  • The family cook deciding what to buy: weighs an air fryer purchase against its running cost, and learns the saving only holds while batches stay small.
  • The renter watching utility costs: cannot change the oven, but can change which appliance cooks dinner, and wants the yearly number before changing a habit.

Accuracy & limitations

This model assumes each appliance draws its full rated wattage for the whole cycle, which is an upper estimate for the oven: real ovens cycle their heating elements on and off once they reach temperature, so a real oven cook usually costs less than the figure shown here, and the true saving is somewhat smaller. Air fryers also vary — a larger basket or a higher-wattage model shifts the per-use figure — and your electricity rate may include time-of-use pricing that this calculator does not model. The batch rule matters most: the saving only applies to cooks you would actually do in the air fryer, so a family dinner cooked in three air fryer rounds can cost more than one oven cycle. Treat the result as a comparison between two cooking habits, not a meter reading.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to cook with an air fryer for a year?

At the defaults — 5 uses a week, 1500 watts, 20 minutes each, electricity at $0.17 per kWh — the air fryer costs $22.10 a year, or 8.5 cents per use.

How much does it cost to cook with a full oven for a year?

At the defaults — 5 uses a week, 2400 watts, 45 minutes including preheat, electricity at $0.17 per kWh — the oven costs $79.56 a year, or about 31 cents per use.

Why is the oven so much more expensive per use?

Two reasons multiply: the oven draws more watts (2400 against 1500) and runs far longer (45 minutes against 20, mostly preheat). One oven use takes 1.800 kWh against the air fryer's 0.500 kWh.

Is the oven cost figure exact?

No — it is an upper estimate. The model assumes full wattage for the whole cycle, but real ovens cycle their elements on and off once hot, so a real oven cook usually costs less, and the true saving is somewhat smaller than $57.46.

Does cooking more often change which appliance wins?

No, the air fryer always wins on cost per use in this model; frequency only changes the size of the saving. At 3 uses a week it saves $34.48 a year, and at 7 uses a week it saves $80.44.

What if my electricity rate is higher?

Both costs rise, and the saving grows with them. At $0.30 per kWh the air fryer costs $39.00 a year and the oven $140.40, a saving of $101.40.

Can I shorten the oven cycle to save money?

Somewhat: a 30-minute oven cycle instead of 45 drops the oven to $53.04 a year and the saving to $30.94. Skipping most of the preheat helps, but the oven still costs more than twice as much per use as the air fryer.

When should I still use the oven?

For large batches — a family dinner, a whole roast, several trays at once — where one oven cycle replaces two or three air fryer rounds. The air fryer wins on small batches; the oven wins when the batch is the point.
