Is an accounts payable turnover of 6.00x healthy?
On the defaults — $900,000.00 of cost of goods sold and $150,000.00 of average accounts payable over 365 days — the accounts payable turnover is 6.00x, the days to pay is 60.83 days, the average accounts payable needed for an 8.00x turnover is $112,500.00, and the cost of goods sold needed for an 8.00x turnover is $1,200,000.00. The accounts payable turnover — cost of goods sold divided by average accounts payable — is the supplier-payment test: how many times per year you pay everything you owe your suppliers. A turnover of 5–10x a year is typical for many businesses (about 36–73 days to pay); retail businesses often run higher because they turn stock fast; construction and manufacturing often run lower because invoices are large and payment terms are long. A turnover below about 3x — over 120 days to pay — usually signals cash trouble or disputed invoices worth chasing. The same turnover can mean different things by industry — a retailer and a construction firm do not pay suppliers the same way — so compare within an industry, not across them.
Four things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the accounts payable turnover is the cost of goods sold divided by the average accounts payable — $900,000.00 ÷ $150,000.00 = 6.00x. Second, the days to pay is the days in the period divided by the turnover — 365 ÷ 6.00 = 60.83 days. Third, the average accounts payable needed at the target is the cost of goods sold divided by the target turnover — $900,000.00 ÷ 8 = $112,500.00. And fourth, the cost of goods sold needed at the target is the average accounts payable times the target turnover — $150,000.00 × 8 = $1,200,000.00; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: $900,000.00 of cost of goods sold, $150,000.00 of average accounts payable, 365 days in the period, target turnover 8.00x.
Line 1 — the accounts payable turnover. The accounts payable turnover is $900,000.00 ÷ $150,000.00 = 6.00x.
Line 2 — the days to pay. The days to pay is 365 ÷ 6.00 = 60.83 days.
Line 3 — the average accounts payable needed. The average accounts payable needed for an 8.00x turnover is $900,000.00 ÷ 8 = $112,500.00.
Line 4 — the cost of goods sold needed. The cost of goods sold needed for an 8.00x turnover is $150,000.00 × 8 = $1,200,000.00.
Line 5 — the check. $900,000.00 ÷ $150,000.00 = 6.00x, the turnover; and 365 ÷ 6.00 = 60.83 days, the days to pay.
Every branch, checked
Cost of goods sold $450,000: Accounts payable turnover 3.00x; days to pay 121.67 days; average accounts payable needed for the 3.00x target $150,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 3.00x target $450,000.00 — With cost of goods sold of $450,000.00 the turnover falls to 3.00x — suppliers take 121.67 days to be paid, the slow band.
Average accounts payable $75,000: Accounts payable turnover 12.00x; days to pay 30.42 days; average accounts payable needed for the 12.00x target $75,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 12.00x target $900,000.00 — With average accounts payable of $75,000.00 the turnover rises to 12.00x — suppliers are paid in 30.42 days, faster than the typical band.
Cost of goods sold $1,200,000: Accounts payable turnover 8.00x; days to pay 45.63 days; average accounts payable needed for the 8.00x target $150,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 8.00x target $1,200,000.00 — With cost of goods sold of $1,200,000.00 the turnover rises to 8.00x — suppliers are paid in 45.63 days, in the typical 5–10x band.
Days in period 90: Accounts payable turnover 6.00x; days to pay 15.00 days; average accounts payable needed for the 6.00x target $150,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 6.00x target $900,000.00 — Over a 90-day quarter the same costs and payables give a turnover of 6.00x and 15.00 days to pay — the same money, measured over a shorter window.
Average accounts payable $100,000: Accounts payable turnover 9.00x; days to pay 40.56 days; average accounts payable needed for the 9.00x target $100,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 9.00x target $900,000.00 — With average accounts payable of $100,000.00 the turnover rises to 9.00x — suppliers are paid in 40.56 days, in the typical 5–10x band.
Average accounts payable $112,500: Accounts payable turnover 8.00x; days to pay 45.63 days; average accounts payable needed for the 8.00x target $112,500.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 8.00x target $900,000.00 — With average accounts payable of $112,500.00 the turnover is 8.00x — the target itself, in 45.63 days.
Cost of goods sold $0: Accounts payable turnover 0.00x; days to pay — (nothing bought on credit); average accounts payable needed for the 8.00x target $0.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 8.00x target $1,200,000.00 — With no cost of goods sold the turnover is 0.00x — nothing bought on credit, so there is nothing to pay.
The reverses, worked backwards
Largest whole-dollar average accounts payable for the turnover to STAY at or above 6.00x: At the displayed $150,000 the figures are Accounts payable turnover 6.00x; days to pay 60.83 days; average accounts payable needed for the 6.00x target $150,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 6.00x target $900,000.00. At the displayed $150,000 the accounts payable turnover is 6.00x. At $150,001 the payables are $1 over the $150,000 allowed — and the unrounded turnover is 5.999960, which displays as 6.00x after rounding, so $150,000 is the largest whole-dollar average accounts payable for the turnover to stay at or above 6.00x.
Smallest whole-dollar cost of goods sold for the turnover to reach 8.00x: At the displayed $1,200,000 the figures are Accounts payable turnover 8.00x; days to pay 45.63 days; average accounts payable needed for the 8.00x target $150,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 8.00x target $1,200,000.00. At the displayed $1,200,000 the accounts payable turnover is 8.00x. At $1,199,999 the costs are $1 short of the $1,200,000 needed — and the unrounded turnover is 7.999993, which displays as 8.00x after rounding, so $1,200,000 is the smallest whole-dollar cost of goods sold for the turnover to reach 8.00x.
Largest whole-dollar average accounts payable for the turnover to STAY at or above 9.00x: At the displayed $100,000 the figures are Accounts payable turnover 9.00x; days to pay 40.56 days; average accounts payable needed for the 9.00x target $100,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 9.00x target $900,000.00. At $100,001 the payables are $1 over the $100,000 allowed — and the unrounded turnover is 8.999910, which displays as 9.00x after rounding, so $100,000 is the largest whole-dollar average accounts payable for the turnover to stay at or above 9.00x.
Smallest whole-dollar cost of goods sold for the turnover to reach 4.00x: At the displayed $600,000 the figures are Accounts payable turnover 4.00x; days to pay 91.25 days; average accounts payable needed for the 4.00x target $150,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 4.00x target $600,000.00. At the displayed $600,000 the accounts payable turnover is 4.00x. At $599,999 the costs are $1 short of the $600,000 needed — and the unrounded turnover is 3.999993, which displays as 4.00x after rounding, so $600,000 is the smallest whole-dollar cost of goods sold for the turnover to reach 4.00x.
Largest whole-dollar average accounts payable for the turnover to STAY at or above 12.00x: At the displayed $75,000 the figures are Accounts payable turnover 12.00x; days to pay 30.42 days; average accounts payable needed for the 12.00x target $75,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 12.00x target $900,000.00. At $75,001 the payables are $1 over the $75,000 allowed — and the unrounded turnover is 11.999840, which displays as 12.00x after rounding, so $75,000 is the largest whole-dollar average accounts payable for the turnover to stay at or above 12.00x.
Smallest whole-dollar cost of goods sold for the turnover to reach 10.00x: At the displayed $1,500,000 the figures are Accounts payable turnover 10.00x; days to pay 36.50 days; average accounts payable needed for the 10.00x target $150,000.00; cost of goods sold needed for the 10.00x target $1,500,000.00. At the displayed $1,500,000 the accounts payable turnover is 10.00x. At $1,499,999 the costs are $1 short of the $1,500,000 needed — and the unrounded turnover is 9.999993, which displays as 10.00x after rounding, so $1,500,000 is the smallest whole-dollar cost of goods sold for the turnover to reach 10.00x.
A warning about the neighbours: every neighbour above shows as the target when rounded to two decimals, but its unrounded turnover is a hair below the target. A supplier underwriting on the unrounded turnover would still say no where the unrounded figure misses the line. The page prints the unrounded neighbour value in full so the rounding does not mislead you: 5.999960, 7.999993, 8.999910, 3.999993, 11.999840 and 9.999993.

Who uses this
- The small-business owner checking the year: they learn $900,000.00 of cost of goods sold on $150,000.00 of average accounts payable gives a turnover of 6.00x — and they check the $150,000 reverse to see the largest payables that still stay at or above 6.00x.
- The finance manager paying suppliers late: they learn a turnover below about 3x — over 120 days to pay — usually signals cash trouble or disputed invoices worth chasing — and they check the $1,200,000 reverse to see the smallest cost of goods sold that reaches an 8.00x turnover.
- The manufacturer whose turnover slipped to 9.00x: they learn the business sits in the typical 5–10x band — and they check the $100,000 reverse to see the largest payables that stay at or above 9.00x.
- The retailer paying suppliers in about 30 days: they learn a high turnover is normal for retail because stock turns fast — and they check the $1,500,000 reverse to see the smallest cost of goods sold that reaches a 10.00x turnover.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the accounts payable turnover is the cost of goods sold divided by the average accounts payable, rounded to two decimals half-up; the days to pay is the days in the period divided by the turnover; the average accounts payable needed at the target is the cost of goods sold divided by the target turnover; the cost of goods sold needed at the target is the average accounts payable times the target turnover. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED turnover: a neighbour one dollar short or over shows as the target when rounded to two decimals, but its unrounded turnover is below the target, so it does not meet the bar — the page prints the unrounded neighbour value in full. What the model cannot do is judge the business: use cost of goods sold when you have it; purchases work when you do not — never revenue, because revenue is what you sell, not what you owe; the average accounts payable is (opening + closing) ÷ 2, a simple average that hides swings inside the period; with average accounts payable of $0 the turnover is undefined — the calculator shows “—” with a note, never Infinity or NaN; with cost of goods sold of $0 the turnover is 0.00x and the days to pay is “—” — nothing bought on credit; a high turnover means you pay suppliers fast and use little supplier credit — good for relationships, but you may be missing early-payment discounts and the free financing that longer terms give; a low turnover means you stretch supplier credit and keep more cash on hand — but it can strain supplier relations, cost you late fees, and, below about 3x — over 120 days to pay — usually signals cash trouble or disputed invoices worth chasing; and the same turnover means different things by industry, so compare within an industry, not across them. The days to pay is the same number as days payable outstanding (DPO) — the two are the same idea in different units. Use it to see how fast you pay your suppliers — then read the rest of the statements.

Frequently asked questions
What is accounts payable turnover?
Cost of goods sold divided by average accounts payable. On $900,000.00 of cost of goods sold and $150,000.00 of average accounts payable over 365 days the accounts payable turnover is 6.00x — you pay everything you owe your suppliers 6 times a year, in 60.83 days on average.
How do I calculate accounts payable turnover?
Divide the cost of goods sold by the average accounts payable. Take the cost of goods sold, divide by the average accounts payable: $900,000.00 ÷ $150,000.00 is 6.00x. Use purchases when you do not have cost of goods sold — never revenue.
What is a good accounts payable turnover?
5–10x a year is typical for many businesses. A turnover of 5–10x a year is typical (about 36–73 days to pay); retail businesses often run higher because they turn stock fast; construction and manufacturing often run lower. A turnover below about 3x — over 120 days to pay — usually signals cash trouble or disputed invoices worth chasing.
How much can I let payables reach for a 6.00x turnover?
$150,000.00 on $900,000 of cost of goods sold. The average accounts payable needed is the cost of goods sold divided by the target turnover: $900,000.00 ÷ 6 = $150,000.00.
How much cost of goods sold do I need for an 8.00x turnover?
$1,200,000.00 on $150,000 of average accounts payable. The cost of goods sold needed is the average accounts payable times the target turnover: $150,000.00 × 8 = $1,200,000.00. At $1,199,999 the costs are $1 short of the $1,200,000 needed, with an unrounded turnover of 7.999993.
What is the largest average accounts payable that still stays at or above 6.00x?
$150,000 on $900,000 of cost of goods sold. At $150,000 the turnover is 6.00x. At $150,001 the payables are $1 over the $150,000 allowed, with an unrounded turnover of 5.999960, which displays as 6.00x after rounding.
What if I have no accounts payable?
The turnover is undefined. With average accounts payable of $0.00 there is nothing to divide by, so the turnover cannot be computed — the calculator shows “—” with a note, never Infinity or NaN. With cost of goods sold of $0.00 the turnover is 0.00x — nothing bought on credit.
Why does $876,543 of costs show 7.10x?
Because the unrounded turnover is 7.100044. On $876,543.00 of cost of goods sold and $123,456.00 of average accounts payable the unrounded turnover is 7.100044, which rounds half-up to 7.10x. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.
